Choosing Foods That Help You Lose Weight

Filed Under (Fitness, Good Health, Motivation, Wellness) by Kevin on 30-04-2008

Most have heard the saying “you are what you eat.” No, you will not become a chicken if you eat fried chicken, but rather it basically means that certain foods can be hard on your digestive tract and figure. Foods like pizza, cheeseburgers or potatoes covered in melted cheese, butter and sour cream may taste delicious but will do nothing for your body. You can enjoy your meals while also avoiding putting on extra weight. Some foods can, actually, help you lose weight and also feel better about yourself in general.

Combine these foods with healthy portions of nutritional food choices such as leafy green vegetables, or healthier carbohydrates such as whole grain bread or rice, preferably red or brown. Protein is an essential nutritional component, but you should aim for meats and fish that are leaner in fat. You can combine some lean meats with other food choices to help your body burn fat, basically acting as a thermal agent.

When you stat to look at the healthier food choices that help with weight loss, you will soon begin to notice the excess weight gradually come off. It is important to lose weight in a healthy way and choosing a diet that includes nutritional choices, like those above, can help you do just that.

It is very helpful to start learning about foods that promote weight loss. Not only do you want to learn which foods to choose, but also how to combine these foods to satisfy your appetite while not adding on the pounds. Some of the best ways to begin learning about these foods is to look in diet and cooking books or magazines for tasteful combinations, or search the Internet where you will find a lot of useful information to help guide you toward nutritional food choices.

You will find that well-known foods such as chives, cinnamon, strawberries, blueberries, apples, berries and cayenne pepper, among other foods can help individuals lose weight. Frog legs and lobster is one more uncommon foods promoted as a good selection for weight loss.

Of course, you cannot add on butter or calorie-dense dressings, but besides that lobster is indeed one of the more positive food choices. Lobster is known to help the body burn some of the fats that have accumulated over time.

Generally, you will find that foods specified as helping with weight loss can range from the expected, predictable choices to the more uncommon foods to include such specialties as lobster. By choosing these foods, you can begin your way to effective, healthy weight loss that is more likely to be a permanent change.

How Can We Evaluate Our State Of Wellness?

Filed Under (Good Health, Personal Growth, Relaxation, Wellness) by Kevin on 28-04-2008

Our bodies obtain a state of wellness when all of its processes, such as physical and mental, are performing at peak levels. Many people ask “what does it take to achieve a complete body wellness?” Well, the fact of the matter is that it requires more than just a trip to the gym, or a walk in the park.

In order for us to establish our state of wellness, we must determine the goals that we wish to achieve through well being. Our lives are made more enriched and simpler to live. We can reap the benefits of well thought out plans of diet and exercise for many years during our lives, simply because we have taken the time to maintain our bodies in a fit and well state.

One of the first tell tale signs as to whether you have a state of wellness is your immune system. By having a healthy immune system you can help to delay the commencement of many age related diseases. Certain health conditions including Alzheimer’s, heart attacks, macular degeneration, and overall feelings of good health, depend entirely upon a healthy immune system.

When we reach the accepted age of retirement, we have the ability to continue in a normal routine when our state of wellness has been maintained. Work becomes a real source of enjoyment for many older people. Their work no longer appears to be a way of stealing their free time. Instead, it becomes a friend that they become accustomed to visiting. This alone, can be a reason to carry on getting out of bed in the morning and going about the day. This becomes an exceptional benefit to our state of wellness and continued good health.

Our mental capacity in order to continue learning, teaching, and experiencing is a top priority in evaluating our wellness goals. Mental sharpness is a result of continuing to use the mind in order to learn, communicate, and think. These benefits are felt for a longer period of time than the benefits of physical wellness.

What are the physical benefits of continued wellness? One of the priceless possessions of continued wellness is that an individual can have the peace of mind that when their body is in shape, they are ready to deal with whatever is thrown at them in life. It is a great accomplishment to know that you have spent the day wisely, and invested your mind into something worthwhile. The benefits of adding a simple 20 minute exercise routine to your daily activities are unbelievable. I can personally tell you that your energy increases, as I am an individual that walks to receive my exercise. I lost a total of 74 pounds in just one year by simply adding this walk to my daily routine. I was one of those people that was dieting with very little success. My physician suggested that I began walking, and since I have undertaken this exercise, I have never been so impressed. I have three times as much energy than I had before. Having increased energy levels is one of the best benefits of a well and fit body.

It is most certainly a lifetime responsibility in continuing our wellness and evaluating our levels of wellness. This is not a difficult thing to achieve if we use our resources wisely as well as educate ourselves as to the things that our bodies require in order to maintain wellness. The benefits from continued wellness are reaped well into our later years. It is important to refer to it as an investment, not of dollars and cents, but of time and education. You will find that the return on your investment was well worth the time and effort, and it is far better than any prescription available.

Three Forms Of Energy Healing: Pranic, Tantric, And Reiki

Filed Under (Fitness, Good Health, Inner Peace, Meditation, Wellness) by Kevin on 26-04-2008

You have certainly seen them while scoping out the New Age section of your local bookstore. Prana. Aura. Chakra. Tantra. What do all of these words mean? What’s the story here? Obviously there must be something to it, with all of these books dedicated to the topic.

Are All Energy Healings the Same?

Prana is a Hindu method of energy healing, and dates back to antiquity. Chakra is a term often seen in regard to Pranic healing, as is the word aura. The aura is a a sort of non-physical companion to the physical body, having seven layers, or chakras. These layers relate to the emotional, spiritual, mental and physical well being of a person as measured in energy. The color and depth of these auras give the healer a clue to the health of the person they are studying. There are six basic color variations in these auras, and are considered to be tied to six personality types. All six colors will be present in all persons, but one or two colors will be prominent in any given individual. These colors are:

Green – ambitious achiever

Blue – spiritual peacemaker

White – unconventional chameleon

Red – activist

Orange – creative communicator

Violet - psychic

Tantra is most commonly associated with the combination of spiritual and sexual techniques, it is also a type of energy healing. From the word tan (to spread, expand), tantra is related to the idea of connectedness. This connectedness is a common theme in writings on tantra. This spiritual/sexual connection is used as a way of energy healing. Tantric practitioners hold that during orgasm, the union of man and woman takes on a spiritual aspect which can cast negative energies and impurities from the bodies of the practitioners. These negative energies if left untouched can cause illnesses.

Reiki has a different origin than that of Prana and Tantra (whose roots of course lie in the Hindu religion). Reiki hails from Japan, and is much newer than the other two forms of energy healing. Reiki means “universal energy”, e.g. and energy emanating form some higher intelligence. Reiki practitioners use this source energy to heal illnesses of the emotions, the mind and the body.

All three systems of energy healing discussed here are similar in their aims, but differ in the source of the energy drawn upon for healing. Prana uses life energy, Tantra sexual energy and Reiki universal energy.

All three also share another similarity: the belief in the interconnectedness of people with their surroundings and with other living (and even non-living) things in the environment, as well as the effect of energy on the well being of individuals.

Why Do People Turn to Energy Healing?

Pranic, Tantric, and Reiki are all considered to be alternative forms of healing. More and more are drawn to energy healing, despite the continual advances made my conventional western medicine. Why is this? Here are some possibilities:

· Energy healing worked where modern medicine failed.

Modern medicine has at times just out and out failed to heal some illnesses. There are reasons for this, some explainable by science, some not. Many will take a chance on alternative treatments as a last resort when conventional medicine has failed. Sometimes, these techniques effect a cure where other methods could not. Whether or not the research bears it out statistically, alternative and traditional healing has saved the lives of some patients.

· People perceive modern medicine to be isolating.

Western medicine is not by nature holistic. Focusing strictly on the disease and it’s cause, rather than the overall health of the patient which provided the disease a place to settle, the patient can be left feeling like they are merely a petri dish where physicians do battle with their disease. While conventional medicine is starting to move in the direction of holistic treatments, the shift is happening gradually. With energy healing, health, spirituality and energy are seen as all part of one thing; this means the patient feels like they are being cared for as a person rather as a symptom.

· Energy healing is non-obtrusive and natural thus it is safer.

Surgery can be traumatic and dangerous for patients, especially if surgical interventions must occur repeatedly. this makes energy healing attractive to many patients. Non-invasive and natural, it is certainly a safe option for treatment, and one rapidly growing in popularity.

· Energy healing is a good way of relieving stress.

An added benefit of energy healing for the stressed individual is its emphasis on meditation. After stress can cause and exacerbate some health conditions. Also, energy healing is an attractive field for students to get into as it doesn’t require practitioners to have tons of sophisticated and expensive equipment.

Traditional medicine and alternative healing methods will continue to fight it out in the arena of public opinion for many years to come. Both have their benefits and their place. What matters in the end however, is the restoration and maintenance of health.

How to Get Moving, Keep Fit, and Remain Motivated

Filed Under (Fitness, Good Health, Motivation, Wellness) by Kevin on 24-04-2008

The hardest part of getting into good shape and staying there is motivation. Our inspiration to stay in shape changes with the seasons. We have holidays to consider, cold winter days, and all of those gadgets of convenience which keep us from maintaining a daily routine or exercise. However, we really should be wise about the way inactivity affects our bodies and our health.

Diabetes, heart disease, and strokes are just a few of the medical conditions which can arise from idleness. But there is good news! Recent research has shown without any doubt that these affects can be stopped or reversed simply by switching from a sedentary lifestyle to a more active one. Exercise on its own, without making any particular change in your diet can reduce the risks of the diseases previously mentioned so by doing whatever you can to increase your motivation has to be of benefit to you. You could try listening to music whilst taking a run, or find some form of exercise which you like and enjoy doing and set aside a particular time of day to do these activities. This will help you to keep motivated. By creating a pattern for your exercise your body will soon become used to it.

Your mind has the ability to create ideas which lead to positive actions and such actions can help you to lead a strong, happy and healthy life. Just talking positive to yourself can work wonders for your motivation levels and even looking at recent improvements for example, a slimmer waist line, will keep you going. Self encouragement has to be the ultimate motivation and you will have no-one to thank except yourself.

If you want to change your body shape, fitness motivation is essential and this will require you to create a fitness motivation plan. For men, goal setting and presenting challenges works best and a change of scenery and some fresh air may be the key to get you motivated. Remind yourself of the rewards you will reap if you continue especially at times when you feel like giving up. Not only will you be more confident and possess self esteem but you will also rid yourself of anxiety, stress and depression.

Sometimes just the idea of a better sexual performance is enough to keep the motivation in place. Set yourself realistic goals because if they are too difficult you will soon feel defeated and be tempted to give in. When you achieve an appropriate goal you will get such a boost and feeling of satisfaction, this in itself creates even more motivation.

Vary your exercise routine, make it fun to do and if you want to ensure you keep up the exercising ask someone to go along with you. This is a sure way of you sticking to the routine you have set.

If you do not know much about fitness in general you could always consider hiring a personal trainer, a professional who knows what he or she is doing. Your trainer will customize a routine just for you and concentrate on the areas which need working on in order to maximize the results you achieve. Of course, before laying out the money to employ a personal trainer, you need to be committed to really going for it. Check out some fitness blogs on the internet – there are new ones added more or less daily and most make for good reading.

Remember to make your exercise regime as interesting as possible. Set achievable goals, adds things to make your training more enjoyable such as challenges or ask someone to go along with you. These are all ways of staying motivated. Get moving, keep fit and remain motivated. What are you waiting for?

Aromatherapy – Past, Present and Future

Filed Under (Inner Peace, Meditation, Relaxation, Spiritual Growth, Therapy, Wellness) by Kevin on 21-04-2008

Aromatherapy’s promising beginning was around 5000 years ago in Egypt and the way it was used then is practically identical to how it is used nowadays, namely as a health and beauty aid. Even now we are still using quite a few of the combinations of essential oils which were prescribed back then by the Egyptians.

Until antibiotics made their appearance in the medical field, aromatherapy was still considered a feasible treatment for many different kinds of ailments. However, due to modern medicine, the old methods of taking care of illness started to decline and continued on a downward spiral until around twenty years ago when society in general began to realize that not everything in the medical field worked as intended. . At this point, even medical professionals were trying to find alternative medicine to treat people with and this is where the term “Complementary Alternative Therapies/Modalities, also know as CAM came into play. Aromatherapy is now an accepted form of CAM.

The nursing organization, upon realizing the benefits of aromatherapy about fifteen years ago began to use this on their acute-care and long term-care patients. In more recent times essential oils have been used in psychology in order to enhance traditional painkillers and it has helped in the region of 80 million people cope with chronic pain. Oils are used in the area of heart disease as a means of relieving anxiety and as part of the healing process. On a day to day note, oils are used more and more for cleaning in both the home and in hospitals in place of products of a chemical nature, providing a twofold purpose of both disinfecting and allowing the benefit of the inhaled scent.

Over the years aromatherapy has gone from strength to strength with emphasis on using it safely. It is not quite as straightforward as mixing a few drops of oil and either inhaling it or allowing it into the skin by way of massage. It is necessary to know and understand the compound and the effect which will be produced from the mix, how to mix the oils properly, where to buy products of the best quality and how to avoid any risks associated with incorrect use.

As part of an increasing business aromatherapy has started the process of setting up legitimate accreditation standards and certifications so the opportunity of fraud is kept to a minimum. Due to the way the oils are extracted from the plants, the cost of oil is not cheap and the performance of the oil is dependent on the quality and the good standing of the manufacturers.

In general terms the use of aromatherapy is considered to be safe but as more and more people enter into this area, training and testing will have to be put into place so standards remain high within the industry. It would be a good idea to seek out the training and qualification procedures of nursing staff that work out of the many cancer centers, universities and hospitals and are involved with holistic medicine on a day to day basis.

The field of aromatherapy is not just about individuals seeking alternative treatments, but also about enhancing the care of patients. If certification standards where in place, this would act as a guarantee that the treatment received would be both safe and of the very best standard available.
