Self-Belief

When it comes right down to it, it is far more important to live an authentic life than it is to impress other people. Have faith in who you are and what you are capable of. Relax and enjoy dreaming of the things and life you want. You don’t even have to know what you want at first, the process of discovering what is important to you is an important part of the journey.

What’s Important to You?

Before you can begin your journey towards a new life, it is important to understand where you are currently at. What is it about your life that you would really like to change? Is lack of time a problem? Does your life lack purpose? Do you want to do something with your life that will provide a lasting benefit? You’re not alone. What are you interested in or moved by? Is there a social concern that you would like to make a difference in? Imagine discussing your ‘achievement’ with Oprah. Which of your ideas leaves you feeling most empowered?

Find a Purpose Big Enough to Drive You.

There are a lot of books centered on discovering your passion, but for most people it is really a matter of rediscovering the things you love to do. Life has a way of drowning out our passions but all it takes to get them back is the decision to do so. Things that make your heart sing should be a part of your life. Painting, handcrafts, dressmaking, gardening, writing, carpentry or any number of human activities can make you happy and can easily be included into your lifestyle. Whether your passion is something you do on your own or with others, your life will be enhanced by its presence. If you can find a way to use your passion for a greater purpose, you will be able to leave a legacy and make a difference.

Be Willing to Learn

You don’t need to copy people but you can save a lot of time and mistakes by learning from the experts. Discover who the experts are in your particular field and use the internet to glean what tips you can from them. You may discover gaps in your niche market that you can fill.

Learn How to Use the Internet to Your Advantage

The internet is the quickest and easiest way to find information quickly. The biggest problem you’ll face is that there is actually too much information. This is why it is helpful to learn how to locate and sort through the most reliable information. You can use online libraries, expert articles and social networking environments to discover the information you are looking for.

Is Your Idea Transformative?

In other words can it change lives (your own included)? If you get on the ground floor with an idea that is needed and will encourage the involvement of others, you may find yourself with a much bigger project than you dreamed of.

Build on a Firm Foundation.

Your greatest asset is your experience and wisdom. It is important to be able to fall back on these no matter what your project. There is an old saying: ‘Stick to Your Knitting.’ This means to stay with what you know or what you are good at. If you have a lot of experience, wisdom and skills in an area that you can turn to a profit, you would be wise to go in that direction. It is a lot harder to succeed when you lack experience and knowledge in an area.

Become an Expert

Once you have turned your passion into a profitable niche or have simply become an expert, you can share it via online video as well as starting a blog. As you increase your audience and perhaps create a vibrant online community, you will gain further knowledge of benefit to others. In other words, your capacity to make a difference in the world from your passion is almost unlimited.

Take Action

It is easy to stay stuck and avoid the necessary steps to turn your passion into a viable business and community proposition. If you need a bit of encouragement, look for someone who can support your goals and is willing to walk with you on this journey. If you make mistakes, don’t be discouraged just learn for them and keep on going. If you do this you will always be moving towards your dreams.

Your Guide To Anger Coping Techniques

Filed Under (Anger, Goals, Good Health, Personal Growth) by Kevin on 27-05-2008

Everyone needs to learn to cope with anger; having a fit of rage is counterproductive and causes, rather than solves problems. We learn how to process anger as we grow; unfortunately not everyone learns how to do this in a healthy manner. Despite your upbringing, you may have still never learned to appropriately cope with anger. For instance, take a child who is rarely praised but frequently punished. This child will very likely grow up to be an adult who ends up punishing his or herself when they make mistakes and has serious problems expressing or controlling anger.

However, most mistakes, even relatively serious ones have no long lasting impact on out lives; so it makes little sense to beat ourselves up over them. Instead, learn from your mistakes. By using positive thinking, you can get a handle on your anger. Anger can be useful when it is channeled into constructive action. However it can also be a powerful negative force in our lives. You can control your anger, or you can allow it to control you.

Control, or the lack of it is the cause of much anger. Learn to talk to yourself; this can be a useful strategy for managing anger. Take a little time out each day (say 15 minutes) to talk over things with yourself. Examine any negative feelings you have and try to figure out why you feel this way. Go over the positive things you do every day and give yourself a pat on the back. If you have made a mistake and are beating yourself up over it, take this time t put things in context. Remember that everyone makes mistakes from time to time.

If you find yourself getting angry at the drop of a hat; screaming, breaking things and so on think for a minute about this when you are taking things over with yourself. If you’ve broken things you’ll obviously need to clean it up. You will have accomplished nothing by this other than having had to take some extra time to clean up. You’ve wasted your time, your energy and likely your money to replace whatever you’ve smashed. You are upsetting yourself further when you scream and rant; this can contribute to health problems like hypertension. Just some things to think about.

Think about ways to deal positively with your anger. Step back for a second when you feel your anger about to take over. You’ll probably find you don’t really have cause to be so angry. However, if there’s a very good reason for you to be angry then think about a good way to use this anger. Remember that more flies are caught with honey…. If you are angry as a result of non stop stress, you then need a strategy for dealing with stress.

Make time for yourself to relax in your schedule. Prioritize your tasks throughout the day to get things done efficiently; this will lower your stress. Don’t procrastinate; this will lead to things piling up. Remember that you are not a superhuman being and you can’t do it all at once and you will make an occasional mistake.

Remind yourself that nothing is permanent. If you made a mistake, it will pass. If you set yourself up for a fall, don’t be surprised when that happens. If you set unrealistic expectations for yourself, stress will be the end result. Take a deep breath, calm down and take things a day at a time – this can help you to effectively cope with stress and anger.

Yoga - What Exactly Is It?

Filed Under (Fitness, Good Health, Relaxation, Spiritual Growth, Stress Management, Wellness, Yoga) by Kevin on 25-05-2008

The practice of yoga was developed by an Indian Hindu by the name of Patanjali way back in the year 300. The word itself means discipline and the whole purpose of yoga is to stretch the muscles, increase the levels of concentration and to strengthen the body in general. It is also a great way to relax and de-stress your body.

There is little wonder that such an ancient form of discipline has turned out to be so popular amongst athletes and modern day entertainers. However, yoga can be practiced by anyone as an occasional simple exercise routine or on a regular basis as a total way of life.

The people who take part in yoga are known as yogis and many of them use this form of discipline to reach a high level of consciousness. They respect the fact that there are certain things they should not be or do such as being greedy, hurting others, lying and stealing and they adhere to things they should do like being clean, feeling content each day, having self control, and leading a studious and devoted lifestyle.

Yogis train themselves how to have physical control over their bodies by taking full and deep breaths. This is considered by them to be a life force and they count their lifespan in the amount of breaths taken and not in the years of their age.

Yoga is different from other exercises as it assists the body to become more flexible as well as improving ones strength. Due to this, some of the yoga exercises and positions known as asanas can look a little strange. You may feel at first that you need to be some kind of contortionist to perform the exercises, but this is not case - you just need to completely relax. Yoga allows you to ease into the stretches gently and you are not required to force yourself into any position. The regularly used expression no pain no gain simply does not apply when practicing yoga. You simply do the best you can at the time and at some point in the future you will find yourself doing more.

Balance is demanded by all yoga positions and as you are unlikely to be able to get this right when thinking about whatever it was you watched on TV last night, you need to learn how to concentrate on what you are doing. Once you have perfected this art, you will discover that you can concentrate on other things much better too.

You will find yoga exercises copy nature and many yoga poses outline the shape of creatures such as the cat, cobra, crab, dog, eagle and tortoise.

For instance, in the cobra pose, you would ask yourself just what it would feel like to actually be a cobra. You lie on flat on your stomach with your forehead resting on the floor and as you breathe in, slowly roll your head backwards whilst supporting your body with your hands. Keep that position and then come back down slowly, all the time moving as a snake would do.

All yoga exercises have been carefully thought out to encourage serenity and strength and every move affects a gland, a muscle or a nerve center.

With yoga you can choose to perform particular exercises to get rid of certain types of back pain or leg pain experienced from jogging. You can also use yoga as preparation for a skiing trip or even to help you overcome your feelings of fear or depression.

The many asanas of yoga, how to do them and the way in which they can work for you can be found in any good yoga book. Do you remember doing handstands and cartwheels in the past? There you go - you may well have already done some yoga without ever even knowing it!

Keeping A Handle On Stress

Filed Under (Personal Growth, Relaxation, Stress Management, Wellness) by Kevin on 23-05-2008

You may have always had problems with stress. Think back to your years in school, even elementary school. Did you get a little queasy and nervous the first time you faced a test which was graded? Perhaps you got tense and it was nearly impossible to concentrate on the task at hand. It only got worse when you received a poor grade on that test – you began to see yourself as a failure!

It didn’t get much better as school went on, although by then you’d taken plenty of tests. This went on right up to your SAT tests. You couldn’t focus on the questions – your mind went blank at crucial moments. You found yourself taking and retaking your SAT’s with stress knocking you down every time.

Certainly taking a test can be a very stressful experience. Whether you are a very young student, or are in college a test can be nerve wracking. Tests decide whether not you advance and whether or not you’ll graduate! Education is vital to success in your professional life. A test can really be a stumbling block if you have a problem handling the stress of these important events.

There will always be some stress involved in taking any test. You can take measures to minimize the amount of stress that you experience and reduce its disruptive effect. One good step is to take a prep course for taking any important tests you have coming up. Test preparation courses for the SAT and ACT tests are widely available and can help you keep your cool when it comes time for the real thing. You’ll learn some useful strategies in these courses such as answering the easiest questions first, pacing and most importantly, not panicking. These are the tools you’ll need to take any test.

Practice tests are of great help to many students preparing for a big exam. The questions on a practice test won’t be the same as one the real test, but should be similar enough that you’ll be prepared and know what to expect when you actually take the exam.

Getting adequate sleep the night before a test is important. Being tired can make it even more difficult to concentrate. Being fatigued may also make you feel frustrated during the exam – which means a lower score for you. Arriving for an exam well rested will help you to do your best.

Nutrition is also key to doing well on exams and keeping your stress levels low. Sugar is not the friend of a student. It leads to a “crash”, which will make it difficult to concentrate. A diet rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains is the way to go to prepare your body and mind for taking a test.

Having a tutor can be helpful as well. A tutor will help you to stay focused while you study; this will improve your study skills all around and will offer you support on being prepared for that upcoming exam. Having someone to help you prepare can give you the confidence you need to keep stress at bay when taking a big test.

Similarly, a mentor may be something you want to seek out. A mentor is something like a coach, working to buildup your confidence. You can learn by your mentor’s example – he or she can tell you how they became successful. With a mentor in your corner, you may find your stress level about this test greatly reduced.

Test taking is a skill. Since it is a skill, this means that it can be learned; something which should put your mind at ease. You can take some time to study test taking in general and thereby become much better at taking any test. Keep in mind that you’re not going to ace every test you ever take. You’re going to need determination and patience to get through this and become a better test taker. Eventually, test taking will be a skill which you have a solid grasp of – and then your test taking stress will melt away.

How To Stay Fit On The Go

Filed Under (Fitness, Good Health, Personal Growth, Spiritual Growth, Stress Management, Wellness) by Kevin on 21-05-2008

Being a busy person that is constantly on the go does not mean that you don’t have the time to stay in shape and keep your body fit while you are traveling. Unfortunately, the excuses we make do not keep us in shape nor able to keep up with the high demands of a busy life. If you join a health club, you would be making a great decision and a much easier way to stay fit.

Many health clubs offer the same types of services in other facilities. Some even have guest passes to specific spas and athletic clubs around the country. Another way to stay fit while traveling is to stay at a hotel that has spas and sporting facilities. If your hotel does not offer these things, it is highly possible that the hotel itself has spa and exercise arrangements elsewhere.

To get this information, ask a clerk at the front desk and he/she is sure to provide you with the information you need. Today, many hotels have treadmills or other exercise machines. This will help keep you active and fit. It is also important to remember that most cities or towns have a YMCA or a YWCA. Search the Yellow pages and give the facility a call. When traveling, there are many opportunities you can take to stay fit.

At times, the specific location you are in might not offer any type of exercise facility or spa for you to visit. If this happens, you can be creative and turn your hotel room into your personal gym. Before you leave to go on your trip, bring along some hand weights, exercise bands, and any other type of exercise equipment that is travel friendly. With all of these items, you can easily turn your hotel room into a gym.

Use your elastic bands are a way to achieve resistance. While in your hotel room, use furniture such as chairs or beds that will help you work out. Depending on the furniture in your hotel room, you just might want to stick to body weight exercises. These are also great ways to keep your fit and in shape. To do this, find ways to combine pushups, legups, and crunches. Though these exercises do not exercise a huge range of muscles, you will still be able to work your heart and continue to build up your endurance.

When traveling, I think we all understand that working out is not the easiest thing to put into a busy time schedule. Many people who travel have very tight time frames and do not also have time to add in a complete workout session. Fortunately, there are many other ways to still exercise in order to keep your body fit. You can simply try stretching in your hotel room or taking a long walk around the hotel or town you are visiting. Many hotels today also have swimming pools. Go for a swim.

Swimming is a great exercise that is able to work the majority of the muscles in your body. You can relax and exercise at the same time. Since there are so many ways that you can work out while traveling, you shouldn’t have an excuse for not finding some way to exercise and keep your body fit. It doesn’t matter what time you work out, just find 20-30 minutes per day to do some sort of exercises, no matter the type. Even if you cannot do the exact some workout routine you are used to, switch it up a little. Any exercise is good exercise.
