Is turning to therapy and medication the most effective solution for fighting depression? Studies are beginning to show that you can fight depression at home with a change in your activity level.

It’s true! Physical activity can have a profound impact on your ability to overcome what ails you. If you’re feeling depressed, it might be time to incorporate exercise into your lifestyle.

Exercise comes in many different forms and you can find a regimen that fits you. Avoid overdoing it when it comes to exercise; just ease into some physical activity and see how you feel.

Try these effective strategies to fight depression with exercise:

1.	Experience the runner’s high. Following a good workout, your body will experience what is known as a runner’s high, which results from an endorphin surge in your body. The temporary mood lift that this endorphin surge provides can be beneficial in reducing depression on a short-term basis.

•	When you’re feeling tense, overwhelmed, or down in general, seek a temporary pick me up in the form of a workout. Go for a short walk, hop on a treadmill or elliptical, or ride your bicycle. Even yoga, Pilates, and strength training workouts can provide you with a boost of endorphins to pick up your mood.

•	Working out for at least 30 minutes to combat symptoms of depression can also provide you with a boost in energy and concentration, which can reduce some of the negative feelings associated with depression.

2.	Improve your overall well being. Strength training is a great way to improve your health and well being, which can reduce symptoms of depression. Lifting dumbbells, for example, can build long, lean muscle, which improves metabolism and builds a stronger and healthier body.

•	While strength training may not directly impact your depression symptoms, its ability to improve your health can have long-term effects on your overall well being.

3.	Exercise daily. Exercise at least 30 minutes each day, six days per week. According to the Journal of Preventive Medicine, several weeks after you establish this regular exercise routine, you’ll begin to feel relief of your depression symptoms on a much more consistent basis.

4.	Replace medications with exercise. The Journal of Preventive Medicine recently featured a study of patients with depression who worked out for at least 3 hours per week. This study found that the remission of these patients’ symptoms was comparable to cognitive behavioral therapies and medication treatments.

•	While exercise may not be able to completely replace your need for other treatment options, it can benefit your mental well being in many ways, making it an excellent way to balance the therapies that you rely on for relief.

•	If you’re currently in treatment or taking medication, discuss any changes in therapy or medications with your doctor before you change them.

5.	Develop a routine. Developing a regular routine for exercise can have numerous benefits. Not only will you be combating your depression with exercise itself, but also having a routine to look forward to can boost your spirits and ward off the overwhelming feelings of depression.

The Bottom Line

Depression can negatively impact your life in many ways. Experiment with different therapy and treatment options to get the help you need. Exercise is a great way to reduce the symptoms associated with depression: helping to clear your mind and improve your energy, while also giving you a general sense of well being.

If you don’t already have a regular exercise regimen and you’re suffering from depression, then this is a treatment option that is well worth considering. It may work well in conjunction with current treatment options or it may replace those treatment options altogether. Please consult with your physician to learn more.

There are several natural ways to treat depression and possibly avoid taking antidepressants. Before you try a natural remedy, be sure to check with your health care provider and make sure that it doesn’t interfere with other medications you might be taking. Some natural remedies work nicely with antidepressants and some may actually cause harm, so be sure you’re doing the right thing.

One thing you can do that works with antidepressants is to combine psychotherapy or counseling sessions along with the medication. Sometimes, symptoms of depression, such as sadness or anger can be alleviated by understanding what’s happening and why you’re having these feelings.

Some herbal remedies work wonders in treating depression symptoms. Herbs such as St. John’s Wort and SAM-e help produce chemicals in your body that naturally work to help manage depression. The caveat with taking herbal remedies is that it could interfere with certain medications, so be sure to consult with your doctor before taking any herbal supplements. That goes for any vitamin supplements too.

Exercise can be a big boost to your health and feelings of well-being, especially for mild cases of depression. Don’t expect exercise to work immediately. It may take a while to be effective, but exercise can prevent recurrences of depression symptoms and is a great, natural way to treat depression.

If you have depression, be sure to try and eat a healthy diet. Foods rich in Omega-3 and B-vitamins are excellent combatants in fighting depression. Folic acid can be found in foods such as oranges, whole-wheat foods, spinach and dried beans and can treat depression symptoms by boosting the effectiveness of your medication.

Socializing isn’t always thought of as a method to treat depression, but loneliness is a big cause of depression, so if you can force yourself to go out, meet people and perhaps join clubs or hobby groups that you enjoy, it can become a natural way to treat depression. You may hate the thought of going out, but try it and see if it doesn’t uplift your mood and spirit.

Relaxation and Meditation are great ways to treat depression and also take some much needed time for yourself. These two natural remedies can relieve stress and anxiety and help you cope with depression when it does strike. Try yoga and breathing techniques, listening to soothing music, reading an uplifting book or taking a walk as natural ways to treat depression symptoms.

Depression symptoms can be an early warning to your mind and body that you need to slow down and do some things for yourself. Natural methods to treat depression can help your entire body and mind to heal.

Are the hopeless, exhausted and sad feelings you’re experiencing signs of depression or just “the blues,” and it’s lasting longer than usual? Understanding the symptoms of depression can clue you in to whether you’re having a typical down time or if you need to go and see a doctor for treatment of depression.

By taking the time to understand the symptoms of depression and know how it’s affecting you, you can get out of the dumps faster and get back to the life you need to be living. Understanding the symptoms of depression is the first step you need to take to overcome this debilitating problem that usually affects everyone sooner or later.

First, you need to know that life’s challenges are enough to sometimes make you sad and disappointed. Those feelings alone aren’t considered depression. Full blown depression is much more than that. When symptoms of depression overwhelm your life so that you can’t work, eat, sleep and barely function through each day, depression may be the reason for this relentless onslaught.

Some symptoms that may be a red flag for clinical depression include:

· Thoughts that life is just not worth living that turn in to thoughts of ending your life.
· Feelings of self-loathing and worthlessness that bring on guilt and sadness.
· Lack of concentration for even the most menial tasks.
· Insomnia that brings on fatigue or sleeping too much.
· Constant fatigue.
· Irritability with others or extreme anger.
· Loss of appetite or binge eating that leads to weight gain or loss.
· Physical problems such as headaches, stomach aches or other chronic pain problems.

Depression can affect young and old, men and women, successful people and those who have lost almost everything. Symptoms sometimes appear different in men than in women and also different in teenagers and even children. Seniors often have a problem with depression after they’ve lost a spouse or had a major life change, such as moving into a nursing home.

Various types of depression can cause varied symptoms. For example, a mild depression could come in the form of feeling slightly depressed and it may go away quickly and your normal mood may return, but mild depression can return again and sometimes last for years. Often, mild depression can go undetected and cause problems in your lifestyle.

Major depression is usually accompanied by a complete inability to find any pleasure in life. If a bout with major symptoms of depression is left untreated, it may last for months, so if you think you’re having symptoms that surpass the normal “blues,” seek treatment immediately.

You can be victorious in overcoming depression and anxiety. Depression is a state of deep despair and focus on the emptiness or darkness of any given situation. The feelings involved are gloominess, crying for no reason that’s known to you – even in public places.

It also involves feeling as if the problems in your life have no solution – that everything is totally hopeless. Do you suspect that you might be depressed? Read the following to see if anything listed applies to you.

Are you no longer involved in doing the things you once did? Do you constantly make up excuses to avoid people and places because you know you’ll have to pretend everything’s okay?

Have you withdrawn from your social circles? Are you staying away from your family because you’re afraid they’ll see through you and want explanations? There are also physical signs of depression. Wanting to sleep more than your body needs. Sleep is a way of avoiding facing another day.

Not wanting to eat or go to work and not caring what happens if you don’t is another sign. What causes depression? The loss of a relationship or if you’re in a relationship and it’s not what you thought it would be, death, a job transfer, children moving away from home – all of those can cause you to sink into a state of depression.

Are you currently taking medication to treat another medical condition? Check the side effects, some depressions are induced by medication. You might see it listed as ‘can alter mood or mental state.’ Depression is often partnered with anxiety. Overcoming depression and anxiety can restore your life again.

We’ve looked at what depression is and some signs now let’s talk about anxiety. What it is and how to recognize it. Anxiety is apprehension that fails to stay in check. It blooms into abiding fear or a heavy weight of worry upon the shoulders. It can also be nervousness that lasts longer than it should.

When anxiety is present, the emotions that you feel act like food for a hungry bear. Once that bear gets a little bit of that food, he’s coming back for more the next time his stomach growls. Anxiety feeds on anxiety. The cycle must be broken in order to stop the constant state of fear and worry.

Signs of anxiety can copy severe actual health problems such as a heart attack. You can experience rapid, shallow breathing, erratic, fast heartbeat and clammy or pale skin. You might feel a weight on your chest, like a band is squeezing your heart. These physical symptoms can be directly traced back to anxiety. Living in upheaval doesn’t have to be the mantra of your life. Overcoming depression and anxiety can happen for you.

Although depression and anxiety are similar, the two disorders require different types of treatments. In today’s world, depression and anxiety can go hand in hand. You may feel anxious about losing your job, your home or your car and become depressed about the situations. In fact, it’s difficult to find a person who’s depressed and doesn’t have some form of anxiety.

You may think you’re depressed, but in actuality, feel tension from life’s daily challenges. You may have obsessive thoughts, feelings of inadequacy, rapid heartbeats, insomnia and other symptoms that could either point to depression or anxiety. On the other hand, you may believe you’re simply anxious about problems in your life, when you’re actually depressed.

How do you find out which one you’re suffering from and get the proper treatment? Seeing a health care provider is the best way to determine the appropriate treatment for either anxiety or depression. But, before you see the doctor, some preparation on your part is essential for him or her to be able to diagnose properly.

Keep a journal of your moods and feelings, and be specific. Write down the time of day you’re feeling down or anxious and what may have triggered the mood. If you’re visiting a doctor for the first time about depression or anxiety, he may not be able to give you a quick diagnosis, and it’s common for doctors to prescribe an antidepressant before making a complete evaluation.

An antidepressant may not be the right choice and may simply mask the symptoms you’re having. It’s important for you to be candid with your physician and ask about seeing a mental health care provider simultaneously with checking out your physical symptoms. Research the various types of depression and anxiety disorders so that you can have an educated conversation with your health care provider.

For example, there are mood disorders that are similar to the symptoms found in depression. These mood disorders come about because of problems in relationships, family and financial concerns. The feelings can trigger sadness that turns into severe anxiety and then depression sets in when the feelings interfere with how you function on a daily basis.

Besides the threat of depression and anxiety, another disorder might turn out to be the culprit that’s terrorizing your life – bipolar disorder. This disorder causes mood swings that go from extreme highs and feelings of euphoria to extreme downs accompanied by racing thoughts, reckless behavior and impulsive decisions. Bipolar disorder should never be treated with antidepressants, so it’s imperative that you discuss these symptoms with your doctor.

As you can see, depression and anxiety symptoms are difficult to separate into a list that defines each one. The symptoms are so similar that these two disorders can be misdiagnosed. Research your symptoms and make sure you’re prepared before you see your doctor.

One of the worst things that can happen to a teenager is the onset of depression. It can affect the child’s relationships and cause a downturn in academic performance. One of the big problems found in teenage depression is that many turn to substance abuse to get relief from feelings they don’t understand.

Teenage depression can become serious and cause life-long problems, so preventing teenage depression is the best way to go. Parental support is absolutely critical to help ward off teenage depression, but even when parents are supportive, normal, day-to-day life and lack of coping skills can cause teens to become overwhelmed.

There are ways to help your teens cope with and understand problems that they may have to confront. Keeping them in physical good shape is one of the best preventatives for teenage depression. Make sure your teen develops good eating and sleeping habits as much as you can. It’s normal for teens to want junk food, stay up late and sleep until all hours, but parents should keep a watchful eye and not let these bad habits becoming the norm.

Mental health is also important to preventing teenage depression. A teen’s sense of self-esteem is vital to a healthy mental attitude, but there are all sorts of obstacles that can deflate that self-esteem. Children can sometimes be cruel or even bullying, and if your teen is confronted with an inordinate amount of teasing or bullying, he or she may be overcome with feelings of low self-esteem.

It’s important that parents take on the role of uplifting their teens, complimenting them and praising them rather than finding fault all the time. They need to know that they’re loved and cherished, but parents should also pepper that adoration with discipline that the teens can depend on, such as curfews, schedules and good eating and sleeping habits.

Sometimes, parents feel that no matter what they do to boost a teen’s self-esteem, it’s a losing battle. Teenage girls are more susceptible to bouts of depression than boys and that, combined with hormonal changes, can push them over the edge. They may become angry, irritable, argumentative and downright hard to get along with.

Keep in mind the challenging changes that are taking place in your teenage girl’s body. Physical development may occur more quickly in some teens than others and relationships may change quickly, causing confusion and anxiety that can turn into full blown depression. Don’t be discouraged if this is happening to your daughter. Instead, try to help her understand these changes and reassure her that the feelings are temporary.

Parents may be able to prevent teenage depression by trying a number of things, including upholding rules that keep your teen healthy, both mentally and physically, and always keeping the lines of communication open.

When you’re feeling distraught enough that you can recognize you need help for depression, there are many options for you to choose from. This can be a blessing for those who like choice, or it can be overwhelming at a time when you have no energy or motivation.

Sometimes it can be embarrassing to admit that you’ve fallen into a funk, so thankfully, there are some discreet products and services that can help you cut through the fog of depression and see the light again.

Depression doesn’t discriminate. You can be a child or a senior citizen, man or woman and suffer from depression. Because of the wide range of people who suffer from this, there have emerged many forms of treatment.

It’s up to you to decide which ones you want to try based on your personal medical history, beliefs, and preferences. Some are rooted in the medical field while others come from a certain ideology.

If you need help for depression that’s so severe, you’re having suicidal thoughts, then it’s vital that you contact your trusted physician immediately to seek treatment. He or she can provide a prescription solution or other form of help quickly.

If it’s not to that point yet, then you may want to consider some of the other forms of treatment for depression, which include:

· Natural Remedies – These are generally herbal, over the counter solutions that help alleviate stress factors that lead to depression. They may include St. John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, or Ginseng to name a few.

· Neuro Linguistic Programming – This is a cognitive therapy that helps change the way you look at life, and at stressful situations that result in a depressive state.

· Hypnosis – This can be done by another person, such as a therapist, or you can learn self-hypnosis to discover a new way of handling your sadness and anxiety.

· Stress Relief – Basics stress relief techniques that alleviate depression can range from something as simple as stress balls that you squeeze in your hand to acupuncture treatments.

· Endorphin Boosters – There are many ways to release endorphins and it can be something as easy as working exercise into your daily routine.

You may have to try more than one form of treatment to find one that works for you, or perhaps do several things together such as exercise, take an herbal supplement, and do self hypnosis, but the end result will be a happier you.

Whenever you need help for depression, it’s important that you not let it get out of control. Not only is depression emotionally draining, but it can do damage to your body over time.

Chronic depression, medically referred to as Dysthymia, is a mild form of depression, but it can affect your quality of life for a long period of time and cause physical and mental complications. Chronic depression may cause you to lose interest in almost everything, develop low self-esteem and basically, become incapable of living your life to the fullest. Old friends and even family members may begin to avoid you after awhile because you bring nothing but negativity to the relationship.

The symptoms of chronic depression are much the same as severe depression. Fatigue, hopelessness, anger, self-criticizing, trouble concentrating and making decisions are present in both types of depression and may or may not keep you from functioning and completing tasks in daily life.

You may not always feel the full effect of these symptoms all the time or even most of the time, but chronic depression can take its toll in a number of ways. It can overwhelm you at times in your life when you’re supposed to be happy, such as during pregnancy or marrying your soul mate.

Normal stresses that people face periodically or every day may affect you differently if you suffer from chronic depression. For example, most people might be able to shrug off a bad day at work, but you might view it as life-changing and it might cause you to withdraw into a dark hole for a number of days or even weeks.

Complications of chronic depression symptoms can virtually ruin your life. The complications may include family or work-related conflicts, substance or alcohol abuse, withdrawal from social activities, suicidal thoughts and relationship problems. All these side effects of chronic depression can greatly reduce your quality of life and could turn into major depression.

Seeking help from your primary care doctor is the first step toward beating chronic depression and when you combine that with help from a counselor or mental health care provider, you can help yourself to resume a normal lifestyle. Antidepressants, prescribed by your doctor, have few side effects and may help to greatly relieve the symptoms that keep you from functioning. Counseling can help you understand why you have a propensity for chronic depression.

Normal feelings of sadness, anger or mild depression are a part of our reactions to stressful situations, but if it lasts for a longer period of time than usual or begins to interfere with work, attending class, relationships or keeps you from performing daily tasks, you could be suffering from chronic depression.

Are you so stressed that it’s causing depression? Don’t feel alone. Many people today are having problems coping with the stressful events and situations bombarding our lives. When stress occurs, it triggers a “fight or flight” response in our brains and, if this occurs on a constant basis, your body and mind might begin to show symptoms of stress depression.

When this type of chronic stress occurs, it may overwhelm you, causing depression symptoms such as mood swings, lethargy and difficulty working or attending classes. You may find it difficult to continue with a normal routine. Stress depression can be controlled by developing a few coping skills and taking better care of yourself.

Coping skills that you may want to take advantage of include meditation, regular exercise routines, including the stretching and breathing techniques that yoga offers. Drinking too much alcohol and drug use also add to the reasons for stress depression, so try and develop a healthier lifestyle by avoiding these stress inducers and eat healthy foods that boost your body’s immune system rather than bring it down.

Scientific studies have proven that a chemical called serotonin manages the part of the brain that triggers depression. If your brain isn’t producing enough serotonin, you may feel sad, lose sleep or sleep too much and develop other, more serious, symptoms of stress depression. There may be other reasons for depression, but lack of serotonin can be a major cause.

Diet and exercise can sometimes boost levels of serotonin. Certain foods such as dairy, nuts and fowl contain high levels of tryptophan, a nutrient from which serotonin is produced. Vitamin B-6 is also helpful in converting tryptophan nutrients to serotonin. If diet and exercise don’t seem to work, antidepressants are usually effective in boosting serotonin levels.

Just because you have stress depression doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re headed toward a more severe case of clinical depression. A temporary depressive state may occur when you’re faced with negative situations in your life such as loss of a job, death of a loved one or even positive changes such as marriage or birth of a child.

Stress, itself, isn’t bad but how you deal with it makes all the difference. Stress and depression are closely related, so if you’re having trouble coping with the stress in your life, clinical depression may occur causing you to have trouble functioning in your daily life.

If you suspect that you may be suffering from stress depression, try to identify the main stressors in your life. Keep those stressors from getting you down by taking advantage of personal support from others, practicing replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, exercising on a regular basis and employing some coping skills and techniques that might help.

You may be suffering from major depression if some of the many symptoms last for at least two weeks. Some of these symptoms include thoughts of death or suicide, sleeping too much (or not enough), lethargy, difficulty concentrating, appetite fluctuations and withdrawal from life. You may have feelings of extreme anger, become discouraged, guilty or even delusional.

Antidepressants are often used to fight symptoms of major depression, but more often than not, the medication should be used in conjunction with psychotherapy sessions rather than alone. Keep in mind that antidepressants used to treat young adults sometimes trigger suicidal thoughts and behavior, so they should be used with extreme caution and under the supervision of a health care provider.

If psychotic symptoms are part of your bout with major depression, lithium and thyroid supplements might be prescribed to further promote the effectiveness of antidepressant medications. If symptoms of major depression, especially thoughts of suicide, aren’t relieved by any of these methods, a physician might suggest ECT (Electroconvulsive therapy). This type of treatment uses electric current to cause a seizure and relieve scattered thoughts.

Doctors may also recommend a less harsh form of treatment than ECT, called TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). This method alters brain function, but with fewer side effects than ECT. Light therapy has also been used effectively to combat symptoms of major depression. Winter months that offer a small amount of sunlight are especially difficult for major depression patients and light therapy can help them regain normal sleeping habits, lessening that symptom of major depression.

Sufferers of major depression symptoms should keep in mind that a healthy lifestyle also helps them feel better and improves their thought processes. Alcohol and drugs should be avoided as should fatty foods. Eating healthy, balanced meals and exercising on a daily basis can also go a long way in relieving symptoms of major depression.

Alternative methods of treating symptoms of major depression include herbal remedies, acupuncture and meditation techniques. Be sure and tell your physician if you’re using any type of natural or alternative methods for treating your major depression as some of these methods might have harmful side effects if used with prescription antidepressants.

No one knows exactly what causes major depression, but one theory is that chemical imbalances in the brain could trigger symptoms. Hereditary, traumatic or sad events in one’s life could also be causes of major depression.

The good news is that major depression can usually be treated with a good outcome. There’s no reason to suffer from these recurring episodes, so research your options and get some relief.
