The most effective way to achieve important goals in your life is to break big goals up into smaller ones. Long-term, medium-term, and short-term goals are all necessary in a successful goal setting strategy.

Using enabling goals, or supporting goals, will ensure that you’re consistently taking steps toward achieving the life you desire.

Enabling Goals

The best way to get where you want to go is with a mix of short, medium, and long-term goals. Each has different benefits and can launch you forward toward the end result that you seek. What ties it all together is enabling goals. These are goals that are formulated as stepping-stones for medium and long-term goals.

Use this step-by-step goal setting strategy to bring your dreams to life:

1.	Set your long-term goals first. What do you want to achieve in the next few years? These are broad goals that will take some time to achieve, like buying a home, graduating from college, or starting your own business. Your long-term goals are the foundation for goal setting as they define where you want to be in the future.

•	Long-term goals should be obtainable within a set number of years. Try to give your goals a time frame, such as buying a home in five years or graduating from college with a PhD degree in eight.

2.	Set your medium term goals next. Let these act as large stepping-stones to help you achieve your goals. For example, if your goal is to obtain a doctorate degree in medicine, let a medium-term goal be to achieve your Bachelor’s degree in the subject, since this is a reasonable goal between where you stand now and the ultimate goal you hope to achieve.

•	Medium term goals should also have specific time frames in mind. These will keep you moving forward, ensuring that you’re always working toward your long-term goals and aspirations.

3.	Finally, focus on your short-term goals. These are goals that you can achieve more readily. Set short-term goals for each semester, for example. Or start with setting a goal to apply for financial aid, a goal to enroll in classes, and a goal to meet with an academic counselor so that you can outline your education plan. These goals guide you toward your ultimate goal.

•	Short-term goals can be anything you want them to be, but they should be enabling goals. This means that they should be small, but definite, steps toward your desired end result.

•	Follow the SMART goal setting strategy for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely short-term goals that you know you can achieve.

Long-term goals tend to be the most meaningful and important, which is why they take so much time to achieve. But we should not only focus our attention on the big picture goals, when it is medium and short-term goals that allow us to get there. Focus on all three types of goals when planning for your future.

The more time you take to plan out your goals, the better the results are likely to be. Planning and forethought can go a long way in helping you achieve what you really desire in your life.

Having visual reminders of your goals, dreams, and aspirations helps keep you focused on what’s important to you.

Throughout life’s daily crises, stresses, and distractions, visual reminders can help you remember the big picture. They can help you overcome challenges and move forward each day toward achieving the life you truly desire.

Knowing that you’re always moving forward brings a confident, peaceful feeling. You’re sure that, no matter what life brings your way, you will achieve the success you crave. This feeling is an awesome motivator to keep you going even when the chips are down, and visuals can help you get it.

Try these ways to use visuals as a means of achieving the goals in your life:

1.	Post-it note reminders. This simple method puts your goals and motivators at the forefront. Buy colorful sticky notes and fun colored pens and commit your goals to paper. Stick these notes in the places where they matter most so you can see them and think about them often.

•	Place notes on your bathroom mirror, your headboard, the refrigerator door, on your favorite coffee mug or right on the bottom of your computer monitor. Any place that you’re likely to glance throughout the day is a good destination for a motivating, goal-setting note.

•	Make your notes specific, “I want to eat right this week to lose 2 lbs by the 1st,” or broad but motivating, “Today will be a productive and motivating day. You can do it!” These sticky notes will encourage productivity throughout the day with simple, basic visuals.

2.	Note cards. Buy a stack of white note cards and commit a goal or aspiration to each one. Decorate them, write notes on them, and otherwise customize them to suit your needs. Keep them in your pocket, purse or brief case and refer to them daily as a means of motivating yourself to achieve your goals and dreams.

•	When you refer to the same note cards on a daily basis, a habit forms. It is said that 21 days of repeating a task will ingrain it in you. Check your note cards daily until it becomes a habit, and it will become a vital tool in helping you achieve your goals.

3.	Visual mind maps. This tool will help you organize your goals in a highly visual way. Create a mind map on a large sheet of poster board. Designate an area for each long-term goal, and add an image and a small amount of text. Create a cloud of medium and long-term goals around each long-term goal, with lines connecting them to the long-term focus.

•	Use images, colors, words, and other meaningful visuals to decorate your poster. Draw your own graphics, clip pictures from magazines, or download images from the internet to create a colorful – and visually appealing – goal-oriented mind map.

•	Put time and effort into the creation of your visual mind map, and then put it in a place where you’ll see it daily. This visual will help you keep your short, medium, and long term goals in mind and will consistently remind you of what you want to be focusing on.

Visual reminders of your goals are extremely beneficial in helping you achieve your dreams and aspirations. These reminders are easy to see on a daily basis, helping you recall your most important goals early on and throughout the day. If there are specific goals you want to focus on, visual reminders are a great way to help you achieve them.

In order to achieve big things in your life, you must be willing to think big. You should dream big and envision your goals to make them happen. Achieving your targets and goals is best achieved when you can imagine every detail of what it is you want to achieve.

When you’re busily working toward bringing your goals to life, you also feel happier and more fulfilled in your journey.

Follow these steps to bring your goals to fruition by envisioning what you want in life:

1.	Close your eyes and imagine your future. Where do you see yourself in a year, five years or ten? Try to think as far ahead as you comfortably can. Do you see yourself with a family, children, a steady job, and a college degree in ten years?

•	Try to have as vivid a visualization as you can. Pay attention to every detail, and let your dreams come to life in your mind, showing you what matters most to you. Think about where you want to be in the future and how you want to get there.

2.	Write down everything you envision. Use as much detail as you can when jotting down what you remember. Write down the most important achievements that you focused on, but also the details about each. What matters most to you?

•	Note the things that stood out in your visualization. Did you own your own home? Were you raising a family? Did you have a job that made you happy? Were you making a comfortable income? What other details stood out? How did you feel?

3.	Create a list of bullet points. Do this for each separate achievement that you wrote about following your visualization. For example, if one of your achievements is “I own my own home,” then you can list things like you are successfully saving for a down payment, that you’re making monthly mortgage payments, and you have a steady job.

4.	Break each of these bullet points down into goals. For example, if one bullet point was to save for a down payment for the home you visualized, how can you get there? Create savings goals that will allow you to work toward having a down payment for your home.

5.	Lay out your plan. Once you have a list of long term, medium term, and short term goals in mind, create a plan accordingly. How will you achieve these goals? How will you bring the life that you visualized into existence? Divide your large goals into achievable steps.

6.	Start achieving goals today. Put your future plans into action today. Vow to take a small step each day toward the future you have envisioned. Move forward every day, even if you are only taking small steps at a time.

7.	Revisit your plan consistently. Visualizations, dreams, and hopes change over time. Revisit the plan that you laid out and the future goals that you dreamed up on a consistent basis to ensure their relevancy over time. It’s okay to change your dreams and goals based on your needs and desires as they change.

Visualizing the “dream you” is an excellent way to bring your goals to the forefront when you’re trying to determine what matters most to you.

When you can picture what your desired life is like, you can better determine the goals you need to set and achieve to get there. All it takes are small steps toward your desired future self, and you can achieve the life you deserve!

New Year’s Day is a great time to implement change and personal growth by setting goals that you want to achieve throughout the upcoming year. Some resolutions are well worth setting, because they can contribute greatly toward helping you live the life you desire and they’re attainable without any unrealistic expectations.

Try these types of New Year’s resolutions to ring in a happy new year:

1.	Health improvements. When your body thrives, you have more energy, enthusiasm, and vitality to do everything you want to do. Focus on setting goals for the specific actions that will provide the results you’d like to see.

•	For example, rather than stating that you want to lose 25 pounds next year, try to find achievable goals that will help you lose weight. Set resolutions such as enrolling in a yoga class, trying three new types of aerobics, or going for a walk each day after dinner.

•	Resolve to bring new experiences into your life. Set goals about new foods that you want to try, eating 3 more vegetable servings each day, or growing your own organic vegetables.

•	These goals are more fun to reach, but they’ll contribute to the same end result.

2.	Financial improvements. Following the same advice as above, try to avoid setting unrealistic resolutions like “pay off all my debt next year” or “Put $10,000 away in savings.” Instead, choose goals for specific actions that will get you where you want to be financially.

•	For example, you may resolve to save all of your spare change and deposit it into your savings account every month.

•	Maybe you’d like to pick up 3 extra hours at work each week and dedicate those earned funds to your savings account or debt repayment.

•	Or make a list of specific money-saving actions like the above that you’d like to incorporate into your daily life and add a new action to your routine each week. By the end of the year, you’ll be an automatic money-saving machine!

3.	Creative endeavors. Creative goals can absolutely lead to personal enrichment and development. What interests you? Set resolutions to try new things, experience new places, challenge your comfort zone, and learn about yourself all at the same time.

•	To get you started, consider resolutions to try new crafts or creative projects, start writing in a journal, take up pottery, or a variety of other creative endeavors. Create a resolution to try a new recipe at least once a month. Or fashion a resolution to hand-make every Christmas gift you give, starting at the beginning of the year!

4.	Intellectual endeavors. Intellectual New Year’s resolutions can also benefit you in many different ways. Elect to take a course or seminar on a topic interests you, such as photography, scrapbooking, auto repair, or entrepreneurship.

•	Challenge yourself to read ten non-fiction books about subjects that interest you, or resolve to participate in an intellectual challenge like NaNoWriMo, November’s “National Novel Writing Month.”

•	New Year’s resolutions are a great way to find new ways to challenge yourself.

Above all else, choose New Year’s resolution goals that actually interest you and that are achievable for you. Resolve to do things that will be enjoyable, while also improving your life as a whole.

What’s your purpose in life? If you don’t have a ready answer, don’t be surprised. Even the greatest of the philosophers who had ever lived succeeded only in making this question more profound. Why? Because the answer lies not in simply knowing what’s your purpose in life but lies in discovering what’s your goal in life. The last one is only possible if you have already gone through the process of goal setting.

Soul-searching is actually personal goal setting in its infancy. The only problem is that for many people that infant never grow up into maturity. The person involved in soul-searching might dismiss this process as nothing but being sentimental. Without realizing it, the person had just killed the infant, or his chance to flesh-out the course of his purpose driven life.

But luckily, soul-searching is a recurring process. So the next time you have been given the honor of another visit, be mindful.

Personal goal setting is a powerful tool for setting a course for a meaningful and fulfilling life. The process of personal goal setting in itself is powerful enough that if you’re going through with the process you might think that your life’s meaning or purpose had been found. But it is not. The euphoria is only a result of your self finally realizing that you’re on the right track.

For some, the process itself is motivating. Once you’ve found a way in making this a habit, you will soon realize that achieving your goals that look like impenetrable walls in the past is nothing but a purpose that needs a set of personal goals as the key.

Personal goal setting: what should be set?

Since there is more to life than the four letters that it represents, personal goal setting involves a review of all the aspects of your life, and all of these should have a corresponding goal. But before going to the process of setting-up goals, you must have one general goal that encompasses all the other goals. In fact the other and smaller goals should work in the service of this large goal of yours.

1. Career. What aspect of your career do you think needs an improvement? Or perhaps, ask yourself: is time for a new career?

2. Outlook or attitude. Is there a part of you, particularly on how you perceive things, that needs to be changed?

3. Financial. Do you have a clear projection as to how much you should be earning in a particular moment in your life? This aspect is closely related with career, so better review and come out with a goal with these two side by side.

4. Potential development. Perhaps some of your talents and skills need an improvement, or are maybe already clamoring for an improvement. Life, after all, is discovering your potential and developing it in the process.

5. Academic. Perhaps you’re no longer getting any mental stimulation lately. Maybe your education-related goals had expired many years ago. Perhaps it’s time to go back to school for another degree, or engage in any thought provoking activities.

6. Family. What is your idea of a family? Getting married, having and raising kids? When? How?

7. Social involvement. Perhaps you want to help achieve something that would make the world a better place? Perhaps you’re into animal protection, environmental concerns, and human rights issues?

These are just some aspects that generally come to mind when it comes to personal matters. If you feel or think that this list is not enough, or doesn’t fit well with you, you may add or change it. Remember, personal goal setting is what its name is – a personal task. It is all up to you to device it and make it happen.

Ever had a goal in life? A lot of us do and this is what keeps us going every single day. While most of us put in the hours to make that happen, it wouldn’t hurt to get a boost from someone who has had hypnosis training.

People with hypnosis training can help you achieve your goals because studies have shown there is a link between your subconscious and conscious mind. Most of the time, our thoughts and actions are controlled by our subconscious so if you work on this, the rest will follow suit.

To make this happen, the specialist has to get you into the zone. One you are in a trance like state, the specialist will now impart a keyword into your subconscious so you can achieve your goal no matter how small it may be.

Specialists who are able to help anyone achieve their dreams will have a lot of clients. These will include ordinary people like yourself and athletes as well.

But will the help provided by the specialist guarantee that you will achieve your goal? No because the specialist is merely a tool and it is your effort that will determine whether or not you make it happen. If you want to ace an exam, you have to study. If you want to win in an event, naturally you have to practice.

So if you think about it, there is no magic pill around that will help you achieve your goal. You must be prepared both mentally and physically to get the results you want.

If you want the help of a specialist, look at your phone directory or online. Once you have a few potentials, do some research by finding out how long they have been in the business, how much do they charge and what are their credentials.

Naturally, you want to work with someone who is renowned in the field so that you don’t waste your time and money.

There is no doubt that you can achieve almost anything with the help of someone with hypnosis training. Aside from helping you achieve your goals, they can also help people suffering from anxiety disorders, addictions and low self-esteem. The common denominator with all of these is the fact that these are all psychological in origin.

This means that these are all in the mind and if you want to do something about it, you need someone to go deep into your subconscious so the proper changes can be made. This can only happen of course if you know someone who has had hypnosis training.

Did you know that you can also achieve your goals by getting hypnosis training? Yes you can because there are courses offered with videos, worksheets and exercises that can teach you everything there is to know.

If you don’t want to get hypnosis training, there is another option. You can buy a CD or download a recording from the web that focuses on goal setting. It is free so you should take advantage of it.

Nobody can be called a specialist and work with certain people without the proper hypnosis training. It is easy to learn and even you can be taught how to do it. You just need to put in the time and open up your mind.

Have you ever set a goal and not achieved it? Most people have. In fact, it’s quite common for people to get stuck in an endless cycle of setting goals and then quitting them shortly afterwards – and accomplishing nothing at all.

Why do people do this? One of the biggest reasons is a lack of commitment to their goal. Without commitment a goal will gradually shrink in importance, and the temptation to quit will seem much more attractive, especially when obstacles cause setbacks and delays.

On the other hand, if you make a serious commitment and then continually remind yourself of it, you’ll be much more likely to persevere and achieve the goal.

Here’s how to commit to your goals:

1)	First and foremost, you have to make sure that every goal you set is of VITAL importance to you. This can be tricky because we so often fool ourselves into thinking we want one thing when we want something entirely different. Take some time with this part of the process, and be sure that you get to the heart of what you really want. Why do you want it? What will it do for you? What positive things will it bring to your life? How will it help you? How will it make you feel when it’s accomplished?

Write all of this down and keep it handy so you can refer to it as often as necessary if you feel your commitment beginning to slip.

Also ask yourself if your goal is worth the effort and sacrifice that will be needed to achieve it. If you can honestly answer yes, you are on the way!

2)	Think about what will happen if you don’t follow through. Would nothing much happen if you don’t achieve your goal? If not, then you need to raise the stakes! You have to make your goal the most important thing in the world, and if you don’t do it, you’ll deal with negative consequences. Even if you have to indulge in a bit of “make believe” in order to do this, do it. For example, play up the fact that you’ll lose respect for yourself if you don’t follow through; or you might agree to give up something you love if you don’t make it happen.

3)	Then, each and every day, renew your commitment. It’s easy to be committed you’re your goal is new and your motivation is high, but you need to be able to STAY committed – no matter what! Each day when you awaken, read through the goal you wrote down on the first day, and stress again how vitally important it is to you. Promise yourself that you’re going to do as much as you can to work on your goal that day, and every day until you achieve it.

When it comes right down to it, no one can achieve your goals for you. If you want to achieve them, you’ll have to find the determination necessary to keep going. Inactivity and procrastination are usually nothing more than bad habits. Turning those habits into something more positive and productive is as simple as taking it a day at a time and working your hardest to change your life. The more committed and determined you are to making your goal happen, the more likely you’ll do just that.

When asked what your New Year’s resolution is, you may say “exercise more often.” That is not a goal, but a vague statement. If you state with certainty, “exercise 20 minutes every other day,” then you are setting a goal that is focused and achievable.

Let’s explore some techniques on how to focus on your goals and achieve more results.

Make a List

Perhaps you may have applied for a specific job, and decided to make a list describing your strengths and weaknesses. The same focus is needed to list your goals in order to achieve them, with one exception. Add a third column indicating a timeline. For example: Let’s assume you want to quit smoking. This will be the title of your worksheet. In the first column, list the number of cigarettes you smoke a week. The second column will feature the cost of purchasing cigarettes, and the third column will feature how much you cut down each week. Eventually, the number of cigarettes versus the cost will decrease the amount in column three. It is realistic, effective, and sends a subliminal message to your subconscious indicating the cost is outweighing the effect.

Prepare a Chart

In an Australian TV series about a cattle ranch run by women, the overseer had a chart in her room. It was her five-year goal. On the chart, she listed her educational pursuits; her first jobs; and her eventual goals, with her ultimate goal listed at the bottom. The uniqueness of the chart was akin to a chart one may obtain to list a family tree. Every goal met was checked off. Using red and black pens to underscore certain achievements, she was well on her way to her final goal; that of owning her own cattle ranch. In this case scenario, art did imitate life.

Charts are a way in which one can really focus and measure their ability to attain certain goals. If additional education is required; add that to the chart. If an internship is needed to obtain a prime spot in an organization; add that as well. Charts are maps which not only give direction, but keep us on the right path to success. So often we veer off, only to find we are lost and unable to navigate our way back. So too, a chart is a constant reminder of where we’ve been, and where we are going.

The next time you are determined to reach a new goal in your life, write down the steps that will guide you to it. Be specific in your detail, and use it as a roadmap to achievement. Focus on it; memorize it, and become empowered by it. You’ll never fail.

Have you ever known someone who would do anything to get what he wanted or to get where he wanted to be? You’ve watched that person be dishonest and take advantage of others to achieve his goal. They say anything and promise everything to get to the top and grab the brass ring.

It may sound like we’re talking about politicians and unfortunately this is true of many of them. But actually, these characteristics are evident in many of those we come in contact with every day in our business and personal life. It’s unbelievable how many people are gullible enough to be drawn in to their web of deceit. These people sacrifice their values to reach their goals.

It’s said that if you want to be successful, if you want to lead, then align your values with your goals. If what’s important to you in your daily living can help you reach your objectives then you’re on your way to the top. Values and goals must complement each other for you to be effective.

But, if you struggle with anxiety and unhappiness as you strive for your aspirations then reaching them may not give you inner peace and happiness even if you’re successful. Don’t act like who you’re not to become someone you won’t like once you get there. If you don’t like yourself then no one else will either.

Define your goals. Of course, there are many types of goals and you must decide which is most important to you and your family. Most people when asked to define their goals first think of their career and monetary achievement.

This may include material possessions and social standing in the community. These could coincide with personal and spiritual goals as you climb the mountain of life. Aspire to strike a balance in all these qualities of life.

Define your values. What do you stand for? Is it courage, honesty, dedication, generosity, thoughtfulness, tolerance, loyalty? What drives you each day to get out of bed and do what you have to do? It could be love of family and God. It could be the thought of possessing power and money. Or, you could just feel peace in helping others achieve their goals.

If you’re to be happy in your career and personal life you must align your values and goals. You could fake it until you make it, but unless these are your true values it would be a hollow victory. Be true to yourself, work hard each day and you’ll become the person you deserve to be.

Who do you admire? It could be a famous person who exhibits the values you’d like to possess. There are many notable politicians, clergy, actors and athletes who live the quality of life you admire. Not necessarily their money but their character. Aspire to be like them.

The person you admire and wish to imitate could also be a personal friend or a family member. Ask them what motivates their lives and how they aligned their values with their goals. If you’re properly aligned with the values and goals of your life, you’ll never regret where you are and where you will end.

As Neil Armstrong disembarked from the space shuttle, he uttered these words, “One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.” If you remember that historic first walk on the moon’s surface, you will understand why one small step at a time is the basic tenet needed to break your goals down into measurable steps.

Mr. Armstrong didn’t just utter one day, “Well, I think I’ll walk on the moon next week.” It took years of education; practice; knowledge, commitment and focus before he was even able to board a spacecraft, let alone walk on the moon. The point is everyone finds it difficult to stay focused on a goal. The topsy-turvy world of self-motivation is evident everywhere. Lose weight; gain weight. Even the smallest goal can carry the heaviest weight.

Realistic expectations and a positive attitude, combined with small action steps can make your goals more achievable. How? You must first know and understand your goal. Begin with one specific goal, and write it down often. It doesn’t have to be anything major; start with something simple. Use construction paper and hang it up everywhere. This is your first step to focusing on your commitment. Then, break it down into small steps.

For example: Let’s say you want to begin a diet and exercise program. Your goal is to lose 50 pounds, and be able to run two miles a day. It’s August; you indicate a target date of February. Write it down: 50 pounds; two miles a day; February. Focus daily on these words. Next, break it down into even smaller steps. Follow a specific diet plan; and begin running 10 minutes a day. If in the first week, you begin to see results – your confidence will build; and you will become even more motivated to continue.

Keep a journal. In one half of the book record your diet progress; in the second half of the book record the amount of running time you’ve achieved. You may not believe it, but when you write about yourself, you tend not to lie about it. Read your journal often. Use a red pen to write your diet and exercise achievements. Even if you consume something you shouldn’t, don’t worry about it. You’re not perfect; and you don’t need that kind of pressure. Just keep going. You’re allowed a mistake every once in a while.

Finally, never give up. You’ve come so far; your confidence is growing, and you are so close to your goal – stay focused. Reward yourself every now and then. You deserve it! Don’t think about the end result, enjoy the journey. If Neil Armstrong can walk on the moon; you can accomplish anything you set out to do.
