Today, the concept of brain training had been fully accepted by science. In a nutshell, it is a series of mental exercises developed and designed to stimulate the functioning of the brain and improve its present cognitive status.

This series of mental drills was first intended to reduce the effects of symptoms connected with Alzheimer’s and other related illnesses that lead to the deterioration of such brain functions like memory, perception and reasoning.

Later, this developed into a full-pledged health aid when research discovered that brain training had helped improve memorization and visual reasoning. Research also showed evidence that these mental calisthenics had considerably slowed down the effects of aging of the mind and other age-related mental deterioration.

This package of exercises usually includes puzzles and logic games, flash cards, video games and other thinking drills. All of them are designed to improve the memory and to help increase concentration. This, in turn, helps better perception and reasoning.

Brain mapping

There are now facilities today that offer brain training using modern techniques and the latest technologies. Usually, these modern clinics begin their program with brain-mapping.

This is to assess the present electromagnetic readings of the brain, its many parts, and the activities in each of these areas. With the gathered information, doctors would be able to design the proper series of treatment protocols that will fit the needs of the patient.

Brain plasticity

The whole concept of brain training hinges on the theory of brain plasticity. In the old days, scientists erroneously thought the brain’s network is already fixed with the onset of aging and that old people could not learn any more new information.

The idea of brain plasticity turned that old notion 180 degrees. Today, we know that the brain is always learning, and that it changes itself with the process and even gets better after sometime.

Scientists now also know that average human beings have the ability to change their brain’s neural paths with the acquisition of new knowledge and experiences.

Other benefits

Brain training not only targets old people but also those regular individuals who have a wide range of mental conditions that needed to be addressed. These modern-day mental troubles include anxiety, depression, stress, addiction and others. (It sometimes includes conditions caused by traumatic brain injuries.)

Brain training had been able to improve many of these mental troubles. With it, patients were able to benefit such things as mental clarity, emotional well-being, and the old abilities to concentrate. There were others, too, who were able to even enhance their physical performances in sports, for instance.

Alternatives

Thankfully, you can do your own brain training. Do crossword puzzles, sudoku, as well as other word and board games. The internet has a wealth of aids to help your skills in memorization, visualization and reasoning – all for free.

The key to getting the most benefits of brain training is consistent, regular practice. Just like physical exercises, all it takes is doing a few ones every day. Coupled with good nutrition and consistent physical exercises, brain training can do wonders for your brain.

We meet these people almost everyday; people who cannot seem to get enough out of doing a certain activity or habit over and over again, mostly out of the need to achieve perfection or because of a fear of something. We often laugh at people who are like this and call them OC, or obsessive compulsive. Unfortunately, being obsessive compulsive is a disorder.

How does a person have OCD, or obsessive compulsive disorder? Some experts say OCD is something that is genetic. That is, if a child’s father or any immediate member of the family has OCD, the child is likely to have it, too, although probably not in the same strain. For instance, an older family member might have an OCD that is related to an unexplainable fear of germs. The younger does not necessarily have it but may have an OCD affliction that is related to the need to see things in proper order all the time.

OCD is called such because, first, it is an obsession. Obsessions are ideas or thoughts that run through our minds repeatedly. Though we may be aware of their repetitive nature and decide that we do not want them around, we do not have the capacity to control and shelve them. There are some people who have OCD who experience ‘obsession’ once in a while. However, there are others whose obsessive feelings and thoughts are felt 24/7.

Second, OCD is a compulsion. By compulsion, we are referring to the acts or behaviors that people assume in order to get rid of the fear or anxiety over a certain obsession. More often than not, these compulsions are grounded on a set of personal predetermined rules, which must be followed with full accuracy and precision. A person who has OCD is very keen with detail, especially during an ‘attack’.

Take for example a person whose OCD nature is the insane fear of germs. Because he or she thinks that germs are everywhere and that he or she needs to be rid of them all the time, he or she might repeatedly wash his or her hands or clean up. The obsession occupied the mind over and over ; thus, the compulsion to take repeated action. It is believed that by performing the compulsions, the fear and anxiety brought by the obsession to our heads, the nervous feelings are assuaged. However, this can only be so for a short period. After a while, the fear resumes and the compulsion worsens.

OCD is actually more common than we think. Some people like to just dismiss it as nothing, thinking that it would eventually correct itself in the long run. Some even find this a laughing matter because, well, repetition does seem funny at times. However, OCD is a serious problem and should be addressed immediately.

Some OCD sufferers are given medication to help control their thought processes. How effective these drugs are remains questionable, though, because people diagnosed with OCD and took the necessary drugs, often find themselves returning back to their usual OCD state after a while. Another treatment used is cognitive behavioral therapy, which is actually more effective because it compels the person to decide for himself or herself that something needs to be done if he or she truly wants to end the disorder. The second method can take a while, but it has been found to be more effective, as opposed to drug taking (which can just have a placebo effect).

OCD is a problem that is not very visible and obvious until it has escalated into a full blown rose. When this happens, people are often confined to a home to be more closely examined. However, while OCD is something that needs our attentions, the good thing about it is that it does not kill us, at least, not deliberately. And while it is an issue for many people today, the fact remains that it can be cured – and that’s all that really matters.

Aside from practicing your brain, there are simple things that you can employ in order to improve your skill of recalling needed information.

1. Organization. You can write things down in journals, notebooks, or telephone books. Taking down notes on complicated information and organizing it to comprehensive categories can help a lot. You can use words, pictures and words in memorizing information.

2. Involve your senses. Though most of us tend to memorize using our visual sense, you can also associate information through using your sense of smell, touch, taste, feelings and emotions. The physical factor of using your senses helps in imprinting data into your brain.

3. Comprehend complex materials. If you need to memorize complex materials, you should understand it first and transform it into simplest forms of learning. If you can explain it in your own words, then you are successful in learning it.

4. Adapt data learning into your learning style. Learning data depends on your learning style, if you are a visual learner, you can memorize data effectively when you read or if you are an auditory learner, you can memorize well if you employ audio devices.

5. Over learning. You can practice information over and over again until it is associated to your brain. If you are preparing for exams for tomorrow, devote your review time by recalling what you have learned at different intervals. Rehearsal is very effective than cramming. If you have over learned certain information, recalling it will be a second nature for your brain.

6. Associate data to what you have learned. You can relate information what have you learned long ago, whether it is an update or entirely new data.

7. Pay attention. You can never recall an information if you never learned it. Learning is encoding data into your brain and to do this, you need focus. If you are distracted easily, try to understand the information in a serene place that you will not be interrupted.

8. Be motivates. If you really want to memorize and learn, you need a positive attitude. If you keep on telling yourself that you are a person with a bad memory, it will significantly affect your mental motivation.

9. Use mnemonics. Mnemonics are clues that can help us to remember anything through association of the data we want to recall with a symbol, a word or a picture.

The common mnemonic devices are:

1. Pictures – you can use microphone to recall your friend mike or wind for Wendy. Always use positive images because the brain tends to block unpleasant images

2. Words. You can use words that start with the first letter of each word that can represent the initial of what you want to recall. Musicians usually recall the lines of a staff E, G, B, D, and F by memorizing the words “Every good boy does fine.”

3. Acronyms. These are initials that can create words. Musicians recall the spaces in a treble staff by memorizing the word FACE.

4. Rhymes. Most of us have learned that 30 days hath September, April, June and November.

5. Humor. By giving exaggerated symbols to associate facts and figures can be pleasing to brain coding because it is funny and it will be easier to remember.

These are some of the simple ways on how you can improve your memory. Through these methods, you can be sure that you will eventually have a sharper and much better memory.

We all know how important it is to get plenty of exercise, both for health and for weight loss. Unfortunately, many of us don’t get as much exercise as we know we should. Maybe you are just too busy to work a regular exercise program into your day but too often the reason for skipping an exercise workout is that you just don’t have enough energy to motivate you. Some of us feel as though we have no energy from the time we get up in the morning while others seem to experience a mid-day slump. If all you need to get you up and moving is a boost to your energy level, then here are eight fantastic ways to turn up the momentum.

1.	Eat more often. Instead of having three regular meals each day, break your food consumption down to six smaller meals. Your loss of energy may be due to drops in blood sugar in between meals. Eating more often will stabilize your glucose levels and give your energy levels a boost.

2.	Take up meditation or yoga or any other method of relaxation. Stress and depression can be at the root of a lagging energy drive. Take a few minutes to meditate before a big meeting or do thirty minutes of yoga every evening in order to wind down. Getting rid of anxiety can keep stressful situations from zapping your energy.

3.	Make some necessary lifestyle changes. Drinking alcohol and using tobacco are both habits that will deplete your body of nutrients and drain your energy. Alcohol can also cause dehydration which is one of the worst energy drainers of all and it can prevent you from getting the deep sleep you need to wake up feeling energetic.

4.	Get a thyroid test. If you are frequently feeling tired even after a restful night’s sleep, you may have hypothyroidism. A simple blood test can determine this for sure. Women are more likely to have underactive thyroid problems than men, especially those who have just given birth or are nearing menopause.

5.	Add more whole grains to your diet in place of sugar. This is another way to balance your glucose levels instead of having energy highs and lows as your sugar goes up and then drops as insulin is released in response. Skip the fruit pastries for breakfast and choose a whole grain muffin instead. Choose whole wheat for your sandwiches instead of white bread or buns and you will also add more fiber to your diet which most of us don’t get enough of.

6.	Take a walk or take a nap. Sometimes the activity of taking a midday walk is all it takes to wake up your body and actually increase your energy. For some people, a power nap in the middle of a day is the best way to feel refreshed and improve their energy level. Whichever one works best for you, take anywhere from ten to thirty minutes to make a significant difference for you.

7.	Eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Different types of produce contain different vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function and to produce energy. Choose different colors of vegetables to get a little of everything.

8.	Allow more time for sleep. Many people believe that they are just fine with six hours of sleep but they really need to sleep another hour or longer to get the amount of rest they need to function at their maximum potential. Just because you are in the habit of sleeping from 11p.m. to 5a.m. doesn’t mean that is all the rest your body needs.

There are many natural, healthy ways to increase your energy including those listed here. Try these instead of turning to high caffeinated beverages and energy drinks to give you a boost that will only let you down in the end!

Holistic healthcare by definition is being able to cure an illness through the use alternative means. This means no medication is given to the patient and an instrument like a bunch of needles could do the trick.

Acupuncture has been around for than 2000 years. It is only recently that this holistic form of healthcare has reached the US. Studies have shown that it can treat minor problems and prevent some from happening.

The needles used in acupuncture are very thin but thicker than the human hair. This makes it smaller than those used on hypodermic needles.

Most patients that undergo acupuncture will not feel any significant change after one session which is why a few sessions are needed. Best of all, it is painless so your body will not feel sore afterwards.

Several studies have been conducted about acupuncture and there have been positive results. For instance in the UK, 400 participants who were suffering from migraines claimed they felt better after 3 months worth of sessions.

In the US, acupuncture has also proven to be effective in helping people deal with arthritis because the needles help the body fight against this chronic illness that is much cheaper and more effective than conventional medicine.

Acupuncture can do more than just helping patients deal with arthritis or migraine. Clinical tests have shown that it can help obese people lose weight and those who are suffering from insomnia.

In some countries, acupuncture has even been used to replace chemical anesthesia prior to surgery as there are some patients who are not able to tolerate regular anesthesia.

Another field which acupuncture has proven to be effective is helping patients deal with their addictions such as alcohol, drugs and smoking. One study of smokers revealed that the average patient will cut down by half the number of cigarettes they consume after just one treatment. Just imagine the potential after a few more sessions!

This has resulted in the establishment of clinics nationwide that only use acupuncture as the means of rehabilitation.

Acupuncturists in the US charge from $75 to $150 per session. This usually gets lower in the succeeding treatments. The person will probably have to undergo 10 to 15 treatments 2 to 3 times a week but this really depends on the condition of the patient.

Before you go to one, you should check if this is covered by your insurance. If it isn’t, perhaps you should suggest that it should be included as it is much cheaper than having to undergo surgery.

Although there are risks if you decide to go undergo acupuncture, these can be avoided as long as the one doing it is a licensed professional who makes sure that the needles used are sterilized before they are inserted into the body.

These days, a lot of people in the medical field have accepted the fact that alternative medicine such as this can also help the patient which is why they may refer someone when it is needed.

So, if you are tired of experiencing the side effects of conventional medicine and want to try a holistic form of healthcare, why don’t you see what acupuncture can do for you? It is painless and cost effective. In fact, it is just one of many you can try to help treat a chronic condition.

For those who are thrilled in experiencing Tai Chi, it is all-possible. Although, there are certain points to remember if you are really thinking of joining the group.

First, know some facts about Tai Chi. Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chuan is not different after all. There might be an additional character on the latter but the meaning stands the same. Tai Chi is just the shorter version. Tai Chi Chuan means “Supreme Ultimate Fist”. It is derived from a series of kung fu techniques so it can be applied as both a therapeutic activity and a medium of self-defense.

Range in the number of students in each class varies but you can expect about 20-30 students in each class. The age factor is between teens and up to the 90s. This art is not common for children though, because the slow movements will just bore them. But most likely, classes like this target people from the early twenties and so on. Men and women alike can enroll in the class. It is quite seldom to see a men-only or women-only class within a Tai Chi program. Generally, it is much more beneficial if men and women mix because of the energy that elevates inside the class.

Being fit is not a requirement. It’s okay if you are stout, thin, overweight or so. Even those who are permanently attached to their wheelchairs can adapt to the movements of Tai Chi. But a certain attention is required. But if you have undergone certain medical treatments, ask your doctor if Tai Chi is really meant for you because if it is contraindicated, might as well drop it. And if your doctor has approved with your Tai Chi, tell your teacher about your disability so he can adjust or restrict movements that you can’t handle.

Tai Chi is both an exercise and a martial art. But there are teachers that give out only the movements that are purely for health. There would be like at least 80% of those who are engaged in the art embrace the idea of Tai Chi being an art. So if you think that you are the type who needs self defense more than an exercise, you can achieve this in some art that exhibits kung fu actions than health exercises. But if you are the type who wants the best of both worlds, Tai Chi is best for you.

Tai Chi is a form of internal martial art that is characterized by soft movements and is trained to be a relaxing and slower speed than other kinds of martial art.

If you keep on thinking what to wear on a Tai Chi class, you don’t have to shop for cool clothes. Special clothing is not a requirement. You just have to wear something really comfortable like snickers, T-shirts and jogging pants. Remember, it must be something that would allow you to move freely while performing every move. Never wear jeans or any constrictive clothing.

Things to expect while in a Tai Chi class are Qigong, which means meditation that is done by moving your body, or otherwise is in a stationary state. Push hands or what is known as tui shou, is an exercise that requires two persons who exchange energy by performing movements leveled with each other. You can also expect the use of weapons like swords.

These will be used in advanced classes and those who enroll are the ones who have already experienced the basics.

When you start forgetting things, you blame your brain. When you don’t feel so good since you stayed up late and drank till 3am, you won’t be working in the office like a sharp instrument. When you don’t even notice what doesn’t work among the solutions you come up with and argue for during meetings, you have to do something about this. When you can relate to all these, you need to better your brain, both in sharpening your perceptions, in improving how you approach problems, in analyzing information, and in adjusting your health, sleeping, eating, and work out regimen.

Your brain is not only like a muscle. It’s also like a 10 year old. It could have started out curious and as you nourish that curiosity and savor the habit of learning more, of seeing relationships among things, of solving problems, you tend to improve the cognitive aspect of your brain.

Problem solving is a good way to keep your brain sharp. Once you get familiar with how your biases clog and impede your way of seeing things, and get some training on problem solving techniques, not only will your stress level go down, you will start to feel empowered. Most people try to avoid problems, but if you’re curious on how to generate solutions to things and to try them out, then problems become opportunities to make things better. The more empowered and capable you feel about your problem solving skills, the better you feel about yourself, the more you become capable of dealing with stress. Consequently, the more capable your observational and analytic skills become, the healthier your brain gets.

So it’s recommended to start researching on problem solving techniques, and see how the many strategies may apply to your various domestic, academic, and work scenarios.

On the other hand, your brain is like a muscle. It atrophies or welts when you don’t use it. Like a plant, It doesn’t grow well when it doesn’t receive the right nutrients. Like a dog underfed and eating trash, it limps and gets sick easily.

There is also a social and self-affirming positive outlook about trying to better your brain. It involves spending time enjoying the company of your friends and family, when you can be yourself, and just let it all hang. There’s something spiritually relieving about being yourself, and around the people you’re comfortable with, and whose company you enjoy. This kind of rest is good for your brain, too.

Get some sleep, a lot of sleep. The brain works better when your synapses are healthily firing and your subconscious has had time to sort itself out. This means rest physically and mentally. The more time away from a problem you get the more your mind has time to work on it, subconsciously. It’s always better to approach work problems after a long night’s sleep.

Work out, too, on a regular basis. The more your heart gets pumped and often the more blood circulates throughout your body, and to your brain, bringing fresh supplies of oxygen and nutrients to it. Also, working out brings about increased levels of release of endorphins that make you feel good. It’s no wonder some people become addicted to exercise. Your brain will like it, too. These are just some of the ways to better your brain.

Everyday the body takes in various forms of chemicals and toxins into the system just by breathing, eating and drinking. The body constantly expends energy and uses up a lot of vital nutrients to neutralize and eliminate these harmful substances. The body’s ceaseless struggle to purge the system of chemicals and toxins affects health in different damaging ways.

If toxic substances build up in the body faster than they can be eliminated, the body produces fat to store toxins. These body fat cells are located as far away from the vital organs as possible, specifically under the chin, under the arms, on the back, hips and especially in the midsection. This is the body’s attempt to protect the organs. The accumulation of body fat is a visible indication of toxic buildup. It is also a sign that the liver is not in a good condition and is not working as effectively as it should. These fat cells are particularly obstinate and will require much effort to lose unless the toxic load is decreased and the body undergoes detoxification. When the liver is overloaded with toxic substances, these toxins begin to circulate in the blood and make the body tired and sluggish. These toxic substances damage the organs and increases inflammation in the body. They can also be causes for headaches and weight gain. Regular detoxification therefore is essential to help the body avoid toxic buildup, thus preventing various symptoms, complaints and diseases.

Detoxification is the process of eliminating toxins from the body. It involves dietary and lifestyle changes that help to decrease toxic intake and improve elimination. Avoiding chemical-laden food and other sources also help control toxin load. Some effective detoxification therapies include juice fasting, colon cleansing, enzyme therapy and exercise, among others. Other benefits of detoxification include reduction of symptoms, weight loss, clear skin, slow aging, improved flexibility, improved fertility and enhancement of the senses.

Juice fasting is when a person refrains from taking in solid foods and instead drinks juice, water and herbal tea throughout the day. Juice fasting allows the digestive system to rest, accelerates the development of new cells, thus advancing healing. A combination of carrot juice, celery juice, beet juice and cabbage juice is recommended.

Colon cleansing rejuvenates the system. It involves healing, rebuilding and restoring the colon or the big intestine to its normal size and shape and correct function. The first stage of the therapy involves cleansing wherein water is infused into the intestine to wash the walls of the colon and remove the waste materials. The next phase then aims to heal, rebuild and restore a healthy colon, thus allowing it to function properly. The healing phase involves the infusion of materials into the bowel to cool inflamed areas and strengthen colon walls. Healing agents are then introduced into the colon to soothe and lubricate it.

Enzyme therapy involves taking supplemental enzyme to avoid enzyme exhaustion. To increase enzyme levels, it is recommended that an individual eat more raw food, take mineral supplements and digestive plant enzymes.

Exercising is another way of detoxifying through sweating and exhaling from the lungs. It has been shown to have a connection with longer life. Because exercising reduces stress, the chances of dying from stress-related diseases are decreased.

Another method of detoxification is magnetic healing, which involves the use of magnets on tissues and permit more oxygen into cell walls. It boosts mental acuity and normalized PH balance through increased alkalinity. It also aids in stopping pain, fighting infection and reducing inflammation and fluid retention.

Everyone has to deal with anxiety and stress. This has been the case throughout all of human history. Thankfully, there are many different ways we can deal with stress and anxiety. A hard workout pumping iron, hitting a boxing bag, or performing high intensity aerobics will reveal all that excess anxiety and restore a sense of calmness. Unfortunately, while there are many people who would love to take part in them, not everyone may be in shape for such hard workouts. Others may find these types of workouts unappealing. Does that leave these people out in the proverbial cold? Actually, there are many unique and fun workouts these folks can take part in. Two of the most fun are Yoga and Tai Chi and they come with many excellent benefits.

Yoga and Tai Chi are nothing new, in fact they have been around for may thousands of years. Yoga was first conceived in India and Tai Chi originates in China. Both of these activities involve freeing the body’s tension by promoting flexibility, instilling proper breathing patterns and by moving meditation. As such, these exercises promote mental and physical health that can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.

There are other added benefits to these workouts. Both Yoga and Tai Chi can help develop lean muscle mass. Now, some may wonder how this is possible since lifting heavy weights is not part of either of these forms of exercise. It is because some of the exercises in these programs rely on isometric tension. This creates an internal form of progressive resistance exercise that helps develop lean muscle mass. This yields greater strength which contributes to alleviating tension in daily life. This then translates into calmer state of mind and all the other benefits that come with it.

One does not even have to invest a great deal of time in these exercises, simply performing them 20 minutes a session every other day can yield many positive benefits. These are simple exercises that do not require a lot of difficult or hard work. They just require a certain level of commitment.

Where can you learn these exercises? There are several options available. Besides the many commercial schools and gyms offering programs, most local community centers offer low cost or outright free courses. Of course, there are a number of excellent DVDs one could view as well. Granted, there will not be an instructor there to help but if you pay attention to the presented material closely, you can still get much benefit from it.

Yoga and Tai Chi have been improving mental and physical health for over 5,000 years. Why not keep the traditions going? It will definitely be to your benefit!
