The First Step Towards Self-Improvement

Filed Under (Change, Motivation, Personal Growth, Self Help and Motivational) by Kevin on 10-10-2008

So how do you stay calm, composed and maintain your self-esteem in a tough environment? Here are some tips you may want to consider as a first step in your self-improvement program.

Once you’ve decided you wish to change some aspect of your life, you first chart out your plan of how to achieve your goal. Once your plan has been crafted, and you know what your first action step is to be, you want to be certain your environment will support you as much as possible in successfully achieving your newly established goal. However, simply because you’ve set out to make positive changes in your own life doesn’t necessarily mean the world around you is going to be supportive.

There are elements that may be present in your life that could destroy your self-esteem and act as roadblocks to any self-improvement effort. This is where determination enters the picture. You must not let these situations destroy your self-esteem and thereby derail your plan to make a difference in your life. So what are some examples of these various elements, or situations, that can have such a damaging impact?

A Negative Work Environment

Beware of the unsupportive “dog eat dog” work environment where everyone is fighting just to keep their heads above water. This environment comes from a place of “lack,” where non-appreciative people usually thrive and are only concerned about themselves and what they will receive. These folks will not appreciate your contributions regardless of your sacrifice, such as missed meals or extended hours. In these situations, you generally will not receive any assistance, even though it may be in the group’s interest to do so.

You need to do your best to avoid, or at least minimize, participation in situations of this nature. Whether you realize it or not, your self-esteem will suffer and negatively impact your progress towards your goal. Recognize that competition thrives in almost any situation. And, competition in and of itself is healthy providing it exists in a positive, supportive environment.

Other People’s Behavior

There are a number of personality types to watch out for. Bulldozers, brown-nosers, whiners, backstabbers, snipers, the walking wounded, controllers, naggers, complainers, exploders, the patronizing individual, the lazy… these are all the types of personalities to avoid. All these folks will do is provide a bad environment, produce bad vibes, if you will, and damage your own self-esteem if you allow it, and again, certainly negatively impact your progress towards your goal.

Changing Environment

It was once said that the only thing that is constant is change itself. The world around us is in constant flux, always changing, and for the most part, for the best. However, when attempting to improve our lives, this changing environment can negatively impact our progress. Change challenges our paradigms. It tests our flexibility and adaptability, and certainly alters how we view the world that surrounds us.

At times, change challenges our present situation, our life. And, it may temporarily cause stress and anxiety. It is best to accept that the world around us is in constant flux, changing from day to day, even if only in minute fashion, and to be as flexible as we can, adopting what we need to in order to cope with our “new” environment.

Previous Experience

If this isn’t the first time you’ve attempted to improve your life, and if the previous attempt was less than stellar in your own eyes, then there may be some reluctance on your part to proceed with a new goal. It’s perfectly okay to be disappointed, to be less than enthusiastic about what may have been perceived as a past failure.

But remember this, attitude determines the success or failure of crossing “the finish line” as much as anything else. Take from the experience any lessons learned, and remember that progress isn’t always measured in a straight line. Vessels rarely get from port to port without having to make course corrections. Take each lesson learned and apply it to your next journey.

Negative World View

Examine what you allow to impact your environment. Limit the negative influences that surround us everyday by limiting your exposure to such events as “the nightly news.” If we allow ourselves to be drawn into the drama of such events, eventually our self-esteem and view of the world around us will be negatively impacted. Simply don’t allow this to happen… you deserve better.

Determination Theory

The you that you are today, your behavioral traits, is said to be a product of your inherited traits (genetics), your upbringing (psychic), and your environment, such as your spouse, your work environment, your social and economic status, and of course, your circle of friends. However, keep in mind, you have your own identity and are in control of determining what it should be. Just because, for instance, a parent is a failure in some aspect of their life doesn’t mean that you too have to befall the same. Learn from other people’s experience and avoid the mistakes while adopting what seemed to work well.

Some people may appear to be born leaders, or perhaps positive thinkers. However, rest assured, having a positive outlook on life is a choice. Building self-esteem is a choice. Being positive and maintaining healthy self-esteem is not a talent, nor is it a gift. You simply don’t require permission from anyone to have either one. So choose what is best for you.

While pursuing our goals and living life in general, it’s difficult to remain steadfast when events and people in our lives attempt to derail our progress and self-esteem. Everyday, we need to dawn our bulletproof armor, tread forward, and act on our goals and dreams. No doubt, along the path, we will suffer some hits and we will get banged and bruised. Nothing worth pursuing comes easy. We simply need to bear in mind that our armor consists of three elements - our attitude, our behavior and our perception of the world that surrounds us.

Building and protecting our self-esteem is critical to any self-improvement goal. We must be responsible for who we are, what we have, and what we do. And if we recognize certain aspects of ourselves in which we wish to change, progress to that end can only improve our self-esteem. When we take control of our mission, our values, and take responsibility for our own discipline… when we strive to truthfully assess ourselves, to strive for self-improvement and set our determination to accept nothing less than our goals and desires… our self-esteem and self-worth can do nothing less than rocket to the heavens.

Be positive. Be content. Be happy. Be appreciative and never miss an opportunity to compliment. Strive to live a positive life, build and protect your self-esteem, and you will be well on your way to successfully accomplishing any self-improvement task that you tackle.

Giving Without Expecting Return

Filed Under (Abundance, Attitude, Inner Peace, Personal Growth, Spiritual Growth) by Kevin on 08-10-2008

Many people are surprised to learn that part of manifesting their desires is giving without expectation of any return.

Now, giving without necessarily expecting to get anything in return is a deep part of personal spiritual growth, and when we grow spiritually we become more and more able to realize our own desires. But still you might have a question about this seeming paradox: if I give without necessarily expecting to be “gratified” or “rewarded” by another for my action, how can that be an action that furthers my own spiritual unfolding, and actually helps me attract all that I want into my life?

In our usual everyday world of buying and selling, getting and spending, we expect that when we do something right, it will lead to use getting something good for ourselves, and usually fairly soon if not immediately. If we give somebody our money, we get a product or service. If we give someone of our time, energy, and expertise, we get money. If we give of ourselves to do well within our company, we get a promotion. Even very simple things count: if we give a “thank you”, we expect to get a “you’re welcome” or at least a friendly smile.

There is truly nothing wrong with these exchanges. However, we are too much with them. We don’t see where those activities have their beginning and their end. We begin carrying those attitudes and expectations over into everything in our lives.

The attitude and practice of giving without expecting necessarily to get anything back is not, it needs to be pointed out, some kind of self-sacrifice. This is not a Kamikaze type practice; this is not becoming a monk who lives only for altruism and the suppression of all selfish desires. What it means is, there are some things that are so good to do, that they should be done just for their goodness, for their own sake, or even just for the fact that they give you intense feelings of having done “something right” in and of themselves.

One of the very best summations of this spiritual attitude can be found in the words of the late novelist Willa Cather: “Writing ought either to be the manufacture of stories for which there is a market demand…or it should be an art, which is always a search for something for which there is no market demand, something new and untried, where the values are intrinsic and have nothing to do with standardized values.”

When Cather speaks of writing in that second way, she is speaking of giving without necessarily getting something in return. She speaks of creating something for the sake of a state of mind “where the values are intrinsic and have nothing to do with standardized values.” Where there is no market demand. Something new and untried. But just think of what you do get in return: a higher state of awareness; the pride that you have given something of powerful, lasting, unaging value to the world; and, you have made the world in which you live a better place, which can only benefit you even if indirectly and not in any immediate sense.

Did you know that one of the money making secrets of the very rich is tithing? They give away at least 10% of their money every year to charity or philanthropy. They consider this part of what makes THEM wealthier. If you send out love, it returns to you in time–often in strange and mysterious ways. And that’s another reason why giving without expecting anything in return works to manifest you dreams: it allows you to receive benefits in ways or from places that you couldn’t imagine before. Your “expectations” got in the way!

Essential Yoga Equipment

Filed Under (Good Health, Personal Growth, Relaxation, Spiritual Growth, Stress Management, Wellness, Yoga) by Kevin on 06-10-2008

Yoga is a challenging discipline for the beginning to the advanced person. The asanas, or postures are slow and steady and are not meant to be painful, but this does not mean that they are not challenging. Never extend yourself too much to cause discomfort. With practice, you should see yourself relaxing into the stretches with ease.

Nevertheless, for beginners there are a few tips when practicing yoga. Release all thoughts, good or bad before you begin. Turn off your phone and don’t answer the door, you need peace and quiet. Make sure you take a warm, relaxing shower and that you wear comfortable clothes that will allow you to stretch easily. You can use aromatherapy that will relax and help to clear you thoughts.

You will want to purchase a yoga mat so you can rest on the pad and not slip and slide on the floor. Make sure your shoes and socks are off and that your hair is either comfortable pulled back or no, whatever feels better. Turn the lights low (or you can do it in the sunlight), whatever suits you. You may want to turn some relaxing music of nature, perhaps the beach. Belts or ropes are used to grab your legs and pull them into a better stretch, which should feel delicious. Blocks are used to prop yourself up and sit better or for standing postures.

Without the prop support, you may not be able to attain some postures. Just remember that although the postures are important, performing them absolutely perfectly is not the goal. Yoga is not just an exercise; it includes the mind and intelligence and the reflection in action. These tools make it easier for you as a beginner in yoga, but you will find that eventually you will not need them. Some people prefer taking a yoga class so they are guided properly. There is nothing wrong with this, but keep in mind that only you can take your mind and spirit as far as it was meant to go, alone.

Hypnosis Suggestion And How It Works

Filed Under (Change, Hypnosis, Personal Growth, Relaxation, Therapy) by Kevin on 04-10-2008

Hypnosis has helped millions of people with various life challenges. For example, hypnosis has been successful in helping people lose weight, stop smoking, quit biting nails, gain confidence, and overcome shyness, and so on. The key to hypnosis working has to do with the suggestions made. For this reason, we strongly recommend you work with a reputable and licensed hypnotist or hypnotherapist. If you conduct self-hypnosis, you need to learn the proper techniques for suggestion. Otherwise, you could find yourself in worse shape than when you started.

The mind is comprised of two parts. The first part is the conscious mind, the part with which you think. The second part is the subconscious mind, the part that you are not aware of, but also the part of the mind that determined most of what you do. Now, when you look at the subconscious mind, it works in very interesting ways. For starters, the subconscious mind is not able to tell the difference between fantasy and reality, or products of our imagination. The reason is that the subconscious mind is limited to deductive logic.

The two parts of the mind, the conscious and subconscious work very differently, which is one of the reasons the subconscious mind has such an important role. With deductive logic, this is the process of reasoning from general to specific. That means the logic applies what you know about many things to one or just a few similar things. As an example, we know that human beings are born with eyes, ears, and a nose. Therefore, when your friend or family member has a baby, through deductive logic, you can assume the baby has eyes, ears, and a nose.

Another type of logic is called inductive, which is the reverse. With this, you would form general beliefs that come from specifics. In other words, you make limited observations and then generalize. The reason understanding these types of logics is that when it comes to hypnosis, good suggestion when repeated enough times and over an extended amount of time, is eventually accepted by the subconscious mind as something being true. The key with hypnosis is to have good suggestions.

By using positive suggestion in the appropriate formula, you will see success with hypnosis. The key with using suggestion is to eliminate resistance for the subconscious mind to accept the suggestion being made. Because when the subconscious mind hears something in the right way, and it believes what it is hearing, then it accepts it. Understanding this and working with a professional that knows how to provide the right type of suggestion is how you will overcome and conquer whatever it is you want.

To give you an example of how suggestion can help, consider this example. Let us say that you were having trouble concentrating. You go to work and for the first two hours, you do quite well. However, as the day wears on, you begin to drift off. Frustrated and discouraged, you know you need to concentrate better to keep your job but nothing is working. If it were up to your conscious mind, you would go to work, concentrate all day, and have a successful career. However, something within the subconscious mind is preventing you from concentrating. With hypnosis, the proper suggestion would be formulated to trigger the subconscious mind. For instance, your mind might be given the suggestion that you will go to work, remain focused on the tasks of the day, resulting in you feeling better and more confident.

Although hypnosis’ suggestions could take hold immediately, it typically takes several sessions. The problem is that some hypnotists or hypnotherapists will give the suggestion with a negative slant. For instance, they may say, “You are tired because you can’t concentrate. To feel better about yourself, you must learn to concentrate.” To the subconscious mind, this comes off as unbelievable, which is why it is not accepted. Therefore, the suggestion must be given in a positive way so it can be accepted as the truth

Unfortunately, many things can block the effectiveness of suggestions, keeping them from being good. Therefore, you have the job of minimizing risk of triggering wrong or bad suggestions. The way you do that is to formulate and apply only suggestions that are positive and good.

Aromatherapy And Its Benefits

Filed Under (Aromatherapy, Personal Growth, Therapy) by Kevin on 02-10-2008

Aromatherapy is one of the healing arts that has enjoyed immense popularity in recent years. This is perhaps because of the medical studies that have cropped up regarding its supposed health benefits. It is known to relieve stress and relax the body. That is why many stores in the malls and even lounge areas in hotels have aromatherapy candles. They believe that they can help relax their clients by using them in their homes.

According to studies, aromatherapy can help relieve headaches and muscle pains especially those who are just having psychosomatic symptoms. When you say psychosomatic, this means the aches and pains are brought on by either mental or emotional causes and don’t have any physical basis at all.

Lying at the heart of aromatherapy are the essential oils. These oils are the ones being used to supply the aroma. Essential oils are natural oils that come from plants. Oils are extracted from their different parts and then processed and bottled. Jasmine and rose for instance come from the leaves of jasmine and rose plants. There are however plants that produce different essential oils for its different parts. One example of this plant is the Orange Tree, which can produce different oils from its flowers and all other parts.

These oils have substances that can be therapeutic. It is said that these oils have antiseptic properties. This means that they can be used to get rid of bacteria and cleanse the body of germs. Essential oils in aromatherapy are also known to stimulate the immune system, helping the body fight off infection and illnesses. The immune system is that part of the body that protects us from sickness.

Another benefit of essential oils in aromatherapy is skin cleansing. It can be used to clean wounds, cuts, and abrasions. Some oils are also used to treat burns and skin problems. However, you must be cautious when it comes to applying these oils onto the skin. Some people may be allergic to these essential oils or their skin may be sensitive. It is good to just do a skin patch test wherein you will be applying a small amount of the essential oil on skin that is often hidden by cloth. This will serve as a test area where you can see if you have bad reaction to the essential oil. If you are allergic to it, your skin will become red and swollen after about 12 hours.
