How Self-Esteem Affects Our Confidence

Filed Under (Personal Growth, Self Confidence, Self Esteem) by Kevin on 10-09-2008

Our self-belief has a profound effect on our confidence and on the quality of our lives. If a person believes that he lacks basic skills to solve problems then he may lose heart and give up. In contrast, a person who has less abilities but who believes in himself stands a much better chance of being successful. This is because his self-belief gives him the confidence to try.

Have you ever wondered why only a few students in a class ask questions? Is it because the others have understood all the points made during a lecture? Or is it because they lack the confidence to ask a question? More often than not, it is the fear of making a fool of themselves that stops students from asking questions. In other words, they lack self-confidence. The only way this confidence can improve is when they start believing in themselves.

This is why self-belief is so important. It gives an individual the confidence to aim for the moon. It overwhelms negative thoughts, and drives away the fear of failure. It is the best antidote against self-flagellation, which turns several talented persons into under-achievers. It gives the students the confidence that they have nothing to loose. On the contrary, they realize that they have everything to gain by asking a question, even if it happens to be a silly question.

Abraham Lincoln is a fine example of a man who believed in himself. He lost every election until he went to the Senate and stood for the post of the President. He did not allow his failures in professional and personal life to erode his self-belief. Had he done so, the history of the US would have been different.

Self-belief gives us the confidence to accept failure. It teaches us the importance of positive thinking. Those who have self-esteem don’t talk about failures; instead, they try to find out why they did not succeed. They look for lessons that can be learnt from their experience. This is not a simple issue of semantics. It is the power of positive thinking, and it is available to only those who have self-esteem.

Once again it is self-esteem that gives us the confidence to enter a new group, and become a part of it. Those who lack self-esteem are very reluctant to approach a new group. They don’t want to expose themselves to the ridicule of being seen as shy, nervous or ignorant. They would instead prefer to stay in their corners.

In fact, lack of self-esteem stands out like a sore thumb at parties, at meetings, at conferences and at social or official functions. Individuals with low self-esteem avoid introducing themselves to others. They prefer to stay in the shadows, away from the sights of others. However, their colleagues who enjoy high self-esteem dominate the discussions. They are sought after by others for information. They are also invited to other meetings and parties — all because their self-esteem gives them the confidence to open up before a group of strangers. It is the same student syndrome that is reflected in an individual’s working life too.

Low self-esteem also lowers an individual’s self-confidence. He takes to liquor or drugs to boost his confidence artificially. Nothing can be more futile or dangerous. Such behavior further destroys an individual’s self-esteem. The best way to break out of this pitiable situation is to build self-esteem, which is not easy. The individual has few options but to begin life afresh. The best is to look for a new workplace and a new set of friends, because it is easy to deal with people who have no preconceived notions about you.

But nothing will work until the individual develops self-respect, and the self-belief that he is as good as others. He must realize that he is not the only one who has strong and weak points; the others too suffer from the same defects. The only difference is that the others project their strong points whereas he projects his weak points. All that he needs is to refocus his priorities. He will find the elusive self-confidence.

The Right Kind Of Pride Is A Virtue

Filed Under (Motivation, Personal Growth, Self Confidence, Self Esteem) by Kevin on 28-07-2008

Is there something you are particularly proud of in your life? Pride in what you have achieved and in who you are is a good thing when it is based on something genuine. It is a positive thing to be able to have qualities of character you can speak well of to others and to believe about yourself. In fact, it is admirable. Don’t be afraid to be proud of who you are. Pride reflects a passion for who you are and for life in general. With the right kind of pride in our lives we can live fully and passionately.

Pride is really the result of being aware of our own personal power. Pride is actually a by-product of our success and in turn strengthens us so that we become even more successful.

Pride can give you the courage to fight for what you want and to refuse to be walked all over. The right kind of pride in who you are and what you represent will help you achieve mastery in your life whereas those who always defer to others live lives of quiet desperation. Pride can give you the gift of personal freedom. It can help you feel more powerful than any difficulty you may confront. It will give you confidence that you can achieve whatever you set out to achieve in life. Nothing will be impossible to you. When you have a sense of personal pride you will not allow yourself to be controlled or limited by other people because you are the master of your own destiny.

Lions roam in prides. The power of their roar and their very attitude reveals their pride in being the “king of beasts.” Not only do they win the game, they eat it. They are the conquerors, not the conquered. Conquerors are the survivors throughout our history and they shape the evolution of mankind. You too, can become a conqueror. Remember, nature rewards the strong and the proud.

In a study of men across a large area of Asia, it was found that eight percent of them were descended from Genghis Khan. Do you realize that your ancestors also live on in you? In fact, you are the result of their pride.

Pride is a natural consequence of honor. We honor people for their great accomplishments and qualities. So, we should also honor ourselves and let others honor us. When we honor others we help them to grow in personal pride. Pride is not a bad thing. It is not arrogant and selfish. It actually means you have a purpose and personal integrity.

Don’t be afraid to feel proud. After all, you have earned the right. You can feel proud that you are alive because nature favors the strong. You can feel proud because you an extraordinary creation called a human being and you are unique. Feel pride in your choices and the direction you are heading, for the destiny that is yours. The right kind of pride will help you become the person you want to be and guide you to a series of successes. True pride is a reflection of greatness.

Have you ever heard someone criticized with words like “he has no personal pride?” It is not a compliment. When you have pride you are living up to certain values and setting a good example in the world. By taking pride in your work, you can build a reputation for excellence that will take you far.

Pride is a cousin to willpower and determination. These qualities create a strong human being, whether male or female. Such a person may at times be demanding but they are also in demand. True pride can motivate us to do our best work and is a quality possessed by those of high character. Individuals who seek to achieve great things for both themselves and others are also proud human beings.

More than anything your personal pride reflects your belief in yourself. You are alive and you have a purpose for being alive. It feels good to live with pride, to have high self esteem and to respect yourself. You deserve to have pride because you are a valuable and worthwhile human being. Living with pride will give you a sense of satisfaction with life and empower you to achieve success.

It may sound simplistic, but it is a lot better to feel happy with yourself than otherwise. Self criticism can wear you down and keep you from being successful but pride in who you are can lift you up and help you do well in life. Let’s face it, no matter where you go you have one constant companion – you. If you have pride in yourself you won’t feel the need to hide from who you are. You will be comfortable in your own skin and happy to spend time with yourself.

Personal pride provides a sense of self confidence that magnetizes you for success. You will attract the things you desire into your life. Let’s face it, you are so wonderful, marvelous and absolutely fantastic that you deserve the good things of life.

Understanding The Connection Between Thoughts And Actions

Filed Under (Goals, Motivation, Personal Growth, Self Confidence, Self Esteem, Spiritual Growth) by Kevin on 25-07-2008

Your thoughts are driven by the way you feel about yourself and the level of your self-esteem, and it’s these thoughts which turn into actions or deeds. The key factors of getting what you want out of life are the actions that you take. Therefore, if you are not reaching your goals and ambitions, take some time to carry out an assessment of how you actually feel about yourself.

Sometimes in order to reach your goals you have to take repeated action and continue doing so without giving in. The determination and drive you need to achieve success can be found in your high self-esteem and personal power.

On the other hand, if you are always criticizing yourself your self-worth will be low and this will make it difficult for you to take the correct actions enabling you to reach your ambitions. This connection between thoughts and actions is what stops you from getting going and is often the cause of surrender.

So what can be done about your self doubt and how can you energize your actions? Positive thinking is a good place to start so give yourself a pat on the back for your lifetime achievements so far.

We have all excelled at something so make a list of your accomplishments and how they came about. What did you do to make them happen? What obstacles did you have to overcome to reach that particular goal? Acknowledging your success to date is a great way to boost your self-confidence. You can then use your list of wins as the foundation to build your success for the future.

Don’t let it slip your mind that there is a distinct connection between what you think and what you do. It’s in your hands to take control of what you are thinking and at times of doubt, get that list out and have another look.

The greatest killer of dreams is thoughts of a negative nature. If you constantly tell yourself you cannot do something, you will reduce your effectiveness and lower your self-esteem to the degree that you will never reach your goals. This is where your list of wins can make you feel positive when such unconstructive thoughts come into your mind.

Try telling yourself that you can do anything if you really want to. Positive thoughts like this will fill you with confidence, make you optimistic and you will then concentrate on the job in hand and make a success of it. Plant positive seeds in your mind and the high esteem you feel will impel you to succeed by getting rid of any doubts or negative thoughts which are preventing you from reaching your goals.

Do You Want to Overcome the Fear of Failure?

Filed Under (Goals, Motivation, Personal Growth, Positive Thinking, Self Confidence, Self Esteem) by Kevin on 27-06-2008

If you have a fear of failure, you’re not alone. Many people do. However, the fear of failure can do more than keep you from being successful. It can also hold you back in other areas, including simple life enjoyment. Often times, fear of failure develops over a period of time, often triggered because you did not get the acceptance and approval you needed from those who were important to you as you were growing up.

If you were raised in a particularly negative environment and received little praise for what you did, you may be among those who experienced fear of failure. Even as you strove for positive recognition and encouragement, you may have learned that no matter how well you did or how hard you tried, it wasn’t good enough.

This may have resulted in low self esteem and may even have become a self-fulfilling prophecy, feeding negativity. Over time, you may have developed an ever-present fear of failure that has made you reluctant to try anything new. If this has carried over into adulthood for you, you may fear that you’ll never succeed in anything you do.

Fortunately, you can overcome this fate. Here are six things to remember:

1. There is a relationship between fear of failure and the resulting (or even preceding) lack of success.

Even though a lack of success and fear of failure have some things in common, they are different. If you lack success, you haven’t succeeded for one reason or another. If you have a fear of failure, you won’t even try to succeed, which in turn of course will lead to a lack of success.

Let’s take a look at how much effort you’ve applied to succeeding at something. Do you see a pattern whereby you stop trying once you’ve lost confidence? If this is you, it’s something that can change and is in fact the biggest reason people fail to succeed. How long did you honestly, truly try before you stopped even trying to succeed with a particular endeavor? Stop for a moment and think about when you’ve lost confidence and subsequently given up trying.

2. How much time and effort do you give something before you give up?

Of course, no one is saying that you need to keep trying endlessly (especially in the same ways) at something that simply isn’t going to work. However, if you have experienced a fear of failure or lack of success previously, you may not have the patience and persistence you need. Remember that successful people, too, have experienced failure. The difference is that they picked themselves up after such failure and gave things another try, perhaps taking a different tack. Increasing the amount of effort you give something without feeling overly stressed or willing to give up too soon is something you need to pay attention to.

3. Build relaxation into your schedule

Of course, you shouldn’t simply sit back on the couch and watch TV all day, but you do need to build breaks into your day so that you don’t get overly stressed and tired, which can lead to giving up overall. If you have an excess amount of stress and negativity in your day, this will give you an even stronger fear of failure. Take regular moments during your day to do something fun that will relax you, exercise, or otherwise take your mind away from the task of the moment. Doing so will put you in a more positive frame of mind and may even allow you to solve a problem you’ve been stuck on. It certainly will also ease the tension. For example, if you can just work for half an hour before you feel stressed, take a small break every half hour. You’ll have an easier time pushing forward if you know that you’re going to take a break in just a few minutes. In addition, make sure you do push forward with full effort during the time you are working. Knowing that you’ve got regular breaks scheduled is, again, going to help you give your full attention to what you’re working on, which will increase your chances of success.

4. Baby steps are the way to go

Instead of trying to accomplish one huge project in its entirety, break it into small and easily achievable steps. Again, take breaks regularly so that you don’t become overly stressed or overwhelmed. If you do this, you’ll come back to your projects fully relaxed and reenergized, ready to tackle problems once again. In addition, this will help keep you positive in general.

5. Keep doing things you know you’re good at

If you know you’re good at something, make sure it’s something you keep doing regularly. If you know you’re good at something, you’re going to feel confident and self-assured when you do it. This, in turn, is going to give you the tools you need to carry that self-confidence and self-assurance into new activities. With this confidence, you’re much less likely to fail and are also much more likely to take setbacks in stride. Therefore, you can take this confidence and utilize it in the efforts you make for new tasks you’re not yet comfortable with. This, in turn, will make it much less likely that you experience a fear of failure to the point where you want to quit.

6. Regularly boost your own self-esteem

One of the best ways to ensure your success is to make sure your own self-esteem is high. Often times, a fear of failure can have its roots in a lack of self-esteem. As you improve your self-esteem, you’re less likely to fear failure. And rather than relying on approval or acceptance from others, you’re going to be able to turn inward and focus on yourself and your own abilities. This in turn will help you garner self-approval in what you do, which is a much more reliable barometer. This makes others’ opinions of you less important.

If you focus on these keys, in time, you’ll begin to see your confidence grow and your fear of failure weaken. Ultimately, it may disappear altogether.
