Burnout is a term used in psychology which refers to the state of physical and emotional exhaustion. It is a condition which usually affects professionals in high-pressure jobs. Additionally, people who find themselves in certain situations which continually spark tension, or in roles which they have been fulfilling over a long period of time, also experience burnout at some point. It is characterized by fatigue or lack of energy, depression, a diminishing or diminished interest in a particular subject or object, and a lack of motivation. Oftentimes, these feelings are accompanied by physical symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, palpitations, and chest pains.

Burnout is caused primarily by prolonged stress. Generally, people who have a tendency to become extremely competitive, take things very seriously or get strongly affected emotionally will sooner or later find themselves losing their inner spark. On the other hand, although some people may not possess these characteristics at the beginning, they may develop them over time, and end up feeling burned out anyway. Most professionals who work in a high pressure environment, whose jobs are demanding and require much attention and dedication, are particularly prone: long work hours and unhealthy sleeping and eating habits shall take their toll. Doctors, teachers, policemen, social workers and lawyers are potential candidates to this condition.

Parenting and housekeeping, while mundane, can also lead to burnout, because routine tasks and a lack of variety combined can trigger stress. Being in a rocky relationship usually involves suppressing emotions and other psychological issues, which can cause stress and eventually result in burnout as well.

In fact, burnout is considered a part of everyday living, and one which no one can escape. However, depending on one’s preference, there are ways to resolve this or avoid it altogether.

Prescription drugs can address the physical and psychological effects such as the headaches and depression that come with burnout. Sedatives, anti-depressants and pain relievers are helpful, but they offer only temporary relief.

The best cure for burnout would be to confront the problem at its source. If it is from work, take time off. If it stems from a bad relationship, try to communicate and ask for understanding. If it’s because of household routine, take up a hobby or outside activity.

However, it is still a lot better to start doing all these – taking a break, doing something different and fun, practicing effective communication – before burnout occurs. Make it a habit to separate yourself for a while from your work, family and relationships to give time for yourself and put things in perspective. And be sure to eat the right food and exercise regularly and do relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation, so that both your body and mind will be more tolerant to stress.

When your life seems out of control and you’ve got endless demands tugging at you from all directions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, fatigued – and just plain stressed!

Believe it or not, balancing your life does not require massive changes. You don’t have to quit your job, abandon your family and escape to a remote retreat in order to feel peaceful and happy. In fact, true balance is something that starts WITHIN YOU first and foremost – no matter what else is happening in your outer life circumstances.

Below you’ll find three simple ways to begin building a greater sense of inner peace and harmony:

1) Quiet time.

One of the first things we tend to sacrifice when we’re busy is our personal time. Instead we devote all of our energy and attention to caring for others, multi-tasking, meeting responsibilities and “being productive.” Over time this depletes our energy and we begin to feel more and more burdened by our responsibilities.

To live a more balanced life, quiet time to yourself is CRUCIAL. You may believe that you don’t have any time available for yourself, but something amazing happens when you consistently MAKE time; you find yourself feeling happier and more energetic, your focus improves – and you still get plenty done! Just a few minutes spent sitting quietly in meditation or reading a book can do wonders in transforming stress into peace and happiness.

2) Self-care.

Beyond making time for things you enjoy, there are other ways to nurture and love yourself on a daily basis. Getting a full 8 hours of sleep (or as much as you personally need) is a great start, as well as eating nutritious food, exercising daily and speaking kindly to yourself.

Have you ever noticed that when you’re really tired or stressed, even the smallest problem can seem like a nightmare? On the other hand, when you’re feeling well-rested and centered, you’re much better able to handle upsets. Caring for yourself is one sure way to consistently replenish your energy, inner peace and joy – which means you’ll have the strength to handle whatever comes your way.

3) Flexibility.

Did you know that one of the biggest causes of stress is rigid expectations? We all do it from time to time; get a mental picture of how our lives “should be” – and get really annoyed when our outer circumstances don’t cooperate! One of the biggest gifts you can give yourself is a flexible state of mind. In other words, learn how to detach from unrealistic expectations and go with the flow.

When you have a flexible mind-set, you’re able to deal with crises and problems much more easily because you’re not working against a preconceived notion of how things “should be”. You’re able to tap into your creative problem-solving skills and move through challenges without all the drama and frustration. Be like the tree that bends with the breeze – and you’re much less likely to break!

These inner changes can make a dramatic difference in your state of well-being, but you may also want to examine your outer life circumstances and see if there are other small changes you can make to help support your inner work.

For example, you might choose to let go of certain obligations that are no longer meaningful or enjoyable to you. Just because you agreed to host weekly meetings for a support group three years ago doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it forever – especially if it’s become a drain on your time and energy!

Be willing to let go of activities that no longer complement the lifestyle you desire, and you’ll create a space for greater fulfilment, joy and peace.

Is your life more hectic than ever? Do you find that you become tired more frequently, lose patience easily, experience moodiness, and are so stressed that you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel? Have you lost contact with your friends? Has fun completely gone out of your life? While we tend to think we can do it all; the problem is we can’t. We forego simple pleasures, take on unnecessary burdens and, quite frankly, put other’s needs before our own. This is a recipe for ill-health, depression, and overall sadness. It’s time to sit down and determine how to live a balanced life.

Performing selfless acts is noble, but it takes a toll we may not be aware of. There is nothing wrong with being selfish. While everyone seems to be concentrating on themselves, you are focusing on them. The first step to a balanced life is to think about you and your needs. If you fall apart, you won’t be of any use to anyone. Selfishness is not defined by an inability to help others; it is the means by which you regenerate yourself by focusing on your own needs. Simple ordinary pleasures can make a world of difference in your life such as: a manicure, a day out with friends; a new outfit.

You’re mental and emotional state has more to do with the balance within than you realize. Worry drains us; yet we can’t seem to control it. We tolerate many things which essentially drain our energy, leaving us feeling empty and void of feeling. Sleepless nights ensue, and the cycle begins all over again the next day. Confront the problems head on; let the water out of the tank before it bursts open. Worry about the things you can control.

Protect your space from intruders who are intent on invading your thoughts and inner peace. If someone is rude or makes a disparaging remark; walk away. If a situation arises creating angst, deal with it then let it go. Don’t let it disrupt your life by claiming it as your own. You didn’t create it, nor are you responsible for it. Try not to solve the ills of the world or place the burden on your shoulders. Life is hard enough without placing unimportant needs ahead of your own.

A path well taken is one of integrity and honesty. Love yourself; look in the mirror every morning and acknowledge the unique person you are. Empower yourself to accomplish your most intimate goals. Acknowledge the kindness and good in you; you may be hard pressed to fine anyone who will. Conduct yourself with dignity and honor. Finally, take charge of your life; nurture it, reward it; and the balance within will reveal itself through the smile on your face, and the gleam in your eyes.

Money isn’t really everything when it comes to measuring success. You need to be happy with your life and you also have to have achieved your goals. You have to remember there are different forms of being successful. There is being successful in your career and there is also being successful in your personal life, such as your married life or being able to start a family.

When it comes to measuring success, the most important thing that should be measured would be your happiness. You have to ask yourself if you are happy with your life or you still have goals that you want to achieve.

For you to become successful, you will need to know what’s important for you. You have to identify the things that are important to your life. These things are the things that make you happy. If you identified the important things in your life, then you will be much happier living your life, which in turn means becoming more successful.

You also have to remember that you should live a balanced life. What this means is that your life should be a healthy mix of activities. Some people measure success when they are at their peak in their career. However, this is not really it. A healthy mix of activities include establishing and maintaining meaningful relationships with the people around you, taking care of your health and wellness, career, financial stability, and continuing personal growth and development.

Planning is another key to success. Always evaluate your life and identify what is working and what is not working in your life. By having a plan, you will be able to be prepared in case things happen. You will be able to adjust a lot easily and you will also be able to accept things that happen in your life easily.

Another habit that you should develop that identifies a successful person is that you should be able to play and have fun as often as you can. You need to remember that people work hard to play. If you are able to have fun a lot more than work, then you are successful. Try traveling if you can and discover and experience new places and culture.

These are the things that you have to remember about the true meaning of success. You have to keep in mind that success is not just measured by the money you have in your bank account, but it is measured by how much you are satisfied with your life.

Since going on a vacation is a great way to get away from stress, take the time off from work, forget everything about the city life, and relax and think of nothing. People who can afford to do exactly that can be considered the lucky ones. For the remaining others or those who don’t have the time to take several days off from work, there are other activities you can do. It might not be as exotic as your dream vacation but it works just fine if you want to relieve yourself from constant stress without cutting too deeply into your schedule:

Start a hobby (get a life). There are many activities that are great stress relievers. Try painting, model-making, solving puzzles, reading for pleasure, music, knitting, sports, and drawing. If it’s practical, try fishing, hiking, or mountain biking once in a while.

Doing away with newspapers, television, internet, radio and every form of media between can add to stress; but if you cannot live without hearing the news and current events stress you out, ‘news fast’ once a week is a good compromise.

Take some time to enjoy. Pampering is not something that is limited when you are on a vacation on an island or in a foreign country. You can always pamper yourself by going to a spa, taking a long bath, sitting and listening to relaxing music or a quiet stroll on your way home.

Act like a child once in a while. There is nothing wrong with goofing around. In fact, light moments significantly reduce the level of stress of a person. Have a laugh with your buddy at work. Play some clean and fun practical jokes on a friend or anything that is totally opposite to work.

Treat yourself for every accomplishment you make. It may be as simple as buying a piece of furniture for your house, dining out with friends, going to a spa, getting a massage, or buying your favorite shirt or dress.

Throw a party. Invite your friends to come over and spend some time without thinking of anything except having fun.

Find something you can look forward to. Give yourself some time off after carrying out a major project. You do not have to travel far. Do something that you always enjoy or try something for the first time, anything that can help you relax and take away your thoughts from work.

Is your job taking over your life? Do you find that you spent little or no time on the activities that you enjoy?

Too often, once you start working, you find that this takes over your life. Then, if and when you get married and have a family, more of your time and life seems to be taken away from your control.

Is this what life is about? Are you allowed to enjoy your life while still dealing with the responsibilities of life?

The answer is an astounding “yes”. The good news is the main person who can make this happen is you. You will need help from others but until you decide and take the necessary action, this will not happen.

The actions taken are simple. First make a list of about 15 to 20 activities that you enjoy doing. This list can contain items that can cost you nothing or much money. Just list all of them.

These activities could be as simple as having a nice warm bubble bath to a holiday at a beach resort. It could be visiting a book store and spending hours before you buy a book or not buy one at all. It could be a massage or just a walk on the beach.

Let your mind go free, close your eyes and think of all the things that make you feel good. Have not got together with your friends for ages? You can call and arrange to have coffee with them.

You may be wondering about your work commitments or who will look after the children.

Identify the work that you take home that does not produce much output. Take some of this time.

If you have children, can the grandparents look after them for a few hours?

It is important to first set your objective about which of the activities in the list you want to do. Once you set your mind on it, you will be pleasantly surprised at how your mind can figure out how to make the time.

To be practical, you will target only one of the activities in the list per week. Set a date and time for it and work towards it as you would for any other task.

As you complete the activity, mark the date against the activity. Have some fun with it. Give the activity a rating of how much you enjoyed it. Draw some stars or suitable pictures against it. Let the child in you come out.

As you go along, add on more items to your list. Slowly you will find that you can do more fun activities at work with your colleagues and with your family and friends.

There is absolutely no reason not to be able to fulfill your work and home responsibilities, and still have a fun and enjoyable life. All it takes is for you to take action.

Managing time in a high-paced world is never easy, but when we have the right tools, it certainly is obtainable. If stress is getting you down, you are not alone. Many people today are suffering stress as a result of the fast pace. Although stress is an obviously problem, it does not have to be. We can manage our stress levels by focusing on time management. We can enjoy a busy schedule while finding time to relax.

Stressors are leading causes to stress and include changes in an environment, family, business, et cetera. Dealing with everyday struggles, can cause stress if we are buying a new home, preparing for marriage, or changing careers. Some of us have to deal with multiple stressors at the same time, and it makes our life more difficult to handle. Multitasking between the struggles is never easy, so relaxing seems to be a thing of the past.

Many of us are overwhelmed by the constant changes in technology, which includes computers, phones, fax, E-mails, cell phones, and other devices. How can we ever get ahead of the game if someone is always changing the plans?

Stress is the leading cause of heart attacks, high-blood pressure, stomach tension, tightened muscles, and other health related pains and aches. Our hormones when pushed beyond the limits often respond in a negative light. Managing time is essential for dealing with stress. If you work, attend classes, and go home to a family every night, you understand that time is vital to maintain.

Work is part of an everyday life, and most of us get up early in the morning and head out the door. Some of us skip breakfast, exercise and other healthful tasks, not realizing that this is part of managing time. If you are taking care of your body, your body will take care of you. Life doesn’t have to be hard; rather it can be a trial and error in soothing lights. Time management starts with a plan. If you have plans you know that goals often following the plan.

Once we set a plan in motion, we must act on it accordingly and sufficiently to make the plan work and reduce our stress level. After we have a plan in motion focusing on our goals, we must find an organizing scheme that works best for our person. Some of us make lists, which are very helpful for putting a plan in motion. Lists are common tasks that we are required to obtain. Getting the most important tasks completed first is part of a time management plan that works most effectively. Once we move the bigger tasks out of the way, we find more time after the little tasks are finished.

Changes are going to happen, and the world is constantly moving, so managing our time is the solution for reducing stress and obtaining goals. Managing time and stress in a fast-paced world is never easy, but the right tools sure can make the load lighter.

Yoga was a big thing during the 60s. However, it soon began to drop in popularity. People undertaking yoga as an exercise soon lost patience with the activity, due to its slow but steady results, and turned their interest to a faster pace of exercise such as aerobics. However, yoga has turned once again in the popularity ratings and become a very attractive form of exercise for people who are interested in working out rather than working towards a spiritual goal.

You will find that yoga is a great stretch and flexibility program. It is being used increasingly by those who have trouble balancing their work and personal life. The personal lives of modern day executives are affected by a stressful working environment and a frantic schedule, so they turn to yoga to help them bring a little peace to their mind and to adopt a perfect work-life balance.

It is also agreed by many runners, weight trainers, and aerobic dancers that exercise regimes do in actual fact add more stress to their lives rather than reducing it.

Many people use their lunch hour to work out, forcing themselves to keep up their exercise regime, and then return in a rush back to work. Yes, maybe this is good for them, but it is just an added pressure. Well, yoga is much less competitive, less stressful, and it gives you a wonderful sense of being.

The key to its renewed popularity is almost certainly its healing aspect. When people push their fitness levels they are bound to suffer with strained knees, aching backs and neck pains which are generated not only by the physical power that they put into it, but also the stress of making it a competitive world. Yoga is nowadays being recommended to patients by many orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors, and neurologists as part of their treatment plan.

The ancient practice is growing in interest in the mind-body connection and it is also boosted by research that suggests that it can reduce stress and blood pressure, as well as improve work performance and even slow down the effects of aging.

Mainstream hospitals and business are now teaching several techniques. This is being done using books, discussion groups, and even using the Internet.

The Army is even interested. It has requested that the National Academy of Sciences study meditation and other new age techniques that may enhance soldiers’ performance.

Details do differ. However, a common theme is relaxing the body while the mind is kept alert and focused, whether it is on an object, sound, breath or body movement. If the mind wanders, and it generally does, you can gently bring it back down and begin again.

Stress related problems do in actual fact account for 60% to 90% of U.S. doctors visits, whilst mind-body approaches are very often more effective and cost effective, than drugs or surgery. For instance, 70% of insomniacs become regular sleepers, 34% of infertile patients become pregnant within six months, and visits to the doctor are reduced by 36%.

Focus is a key component when it comes to time management. Loss and gain can be achieved when it comes to implementing the use of time management. Many individuals have heard of the “Pareto Principle”. Perhaps you have not heard this term used? It is the same as the “80:20 Rule”. This little rule actually makes a lot of sense when it comes to time management. It states that when an individual puts forth the effort to do something, and it is not managed appropriately in the terms of “time”, 80% of that activity will only produce approximately 20% of the results intended. Then, if you flip the coin, and do something that is managed appropriately in the terms of “time”, then it will produce 80% of the results with only 20% of effort put into it. This rule clearly outlines the fact that time well managed is time that is more productive.

Many individuals fail in the area of time management simply because their perception of this concept is out of line with what is appropriate. These individuals often view time management as a restrictive set of rules that must be adhered to or less negative consequences will arise. When this type of outlook is taken, it often results in failure. While it is important to understand that there are many core essentials when it comes to time management, these are not meant to be negative, but constructive. Some of the core essentials include scheduling time as appropriate and necessary, setting goals that are relative to the outcome that you wish to achieve, creative planning, and being able to prioritize appropriately.

When it comes to being successful in time management, it is important to know and understand that certain skills are required in order to succeed. Not only are these skills important to the success of time management, but they are also important when it comes to growing as an individual. These skills include the following:

- The ability to make decisions

- A high level of emotional intelligence

- Skills in critical thinking

- Multitasking skills

If you have a good grasp on the skills mentioned above, you are more likely to succeed when it comes to time management skills.

Time management can be included in every single aspect of your life. It is important to appropriately balance both your personal and professional life when attempting to manage your time. If you make a point to do this, you will be much more effective in every area. Many do not realize that it is actually necessary to take the time to make sure that there is a delicate balance between their personal time, as well as their professional time. If you manage one, the other will simply fall into place. Just remember, the secret to managing your time does not rest in the ability to stay busy, it rests in the ability to produce results in every single aspect of your life!

There are generally six areas that personal and business coaches focus on when individuals seek professional assistance for time management development. These areas include the following:

1. The Physical

2. Social

3. Career

4. Intellectual

5. Spiritual

6. Emotional

If you are attempting to increase your time management skills, it is important that you focus on these six areas as well. By doing so, you will find that it is relatively easy to accomplish all that you set out to each and every single day.

The following details steps that you can take in order to get a better grasp on your time:

1. First, it is always important to plan in advance. At the bare minimum, it is important that you carefully outline the things that you must do each day, prior to starting your day.

2. When planning your day, it is essential that you prioritize your tasks.

3. If you must, keep a detailed list of the things that you must complete during the day in order to ensure that you do not lose track of your time.

4. Learn to say “no” to commitments that you find will hinder your productivity and time.

If you follow the tips listed here, you will soon find that managing your time is a simple task.

Burnout associated with the workplace is a common issue. This is normally a result of stress that is experienced in the workplace. When an employee suffers from work-related burnout, they often feel as if they are emotionally and mentally exhausted. In addition to this, it is also quite common to experience a true, physical exhaustion as well. When this common experience appears in an individual’s life, a general sense of apathy may overwhelm them. They may feel disheartened, and lack the motivation to perform even their basic responsibilities. Here, you will gain an understanding regarding burnout in the workplace.

When an individual experienced work-related burnout, it is a condition that has developed over time. It is not likely that an employee will become overwhelmed with burnout overnight. This is mostly a slow process that develops more and more as time progresses. This is a direct result of stress that is experienced in the workplace. Deadlines, dealing with uncooperative coworkers, unfavorable work conditions, and personal unhappiness in the work environment can all lead to burnout. This condition can affect all areas of an individual’s life – job performance, relationships in the workplace, personal relationships, and even a person’s health.

There are many signs and symptoms associated with work-related burnout. If you are in charge of employees, it is important that you gain an understanding of these signs. If you are an employee in the workplace, you should also learn the signs and symptoms associated with burnout. The more quickly that you are able to recognize that burnout is becoming evident, the quicker you can work to resolve the issues that you are facing. Listed below are some of the most common signs and symptoms associated with this common, and every real issue:

- One of the first signs of burnout is when an individual becomes frustrated. This frustration may be self-directed, directed to others, or towards the company in which they work.

- The second sign that an employee may be experiencing burnout is when their performance starts to falter. In many cases, this sign may be the most evident. A once reliable individual who completed work in a timely fashion that displayed a high level of quality may begin to take longer completing tasks, and the quality of their work may decline rapidly.

- Many individuals who experience workplace burnout may start expressing the fact that they feel as if they are “trapped” in their work situation. If an individual feels “trapped”, this is a bad sign. It is important to be happy and content with the work that we do. If we feel anything else than this, it is important to seek assistance as workplace burnout is becoming evident.

- Those that experience this common work-related issue may start to detach themselves from friends, relatives, coworkers, social situations, and more. Social detachment is not a good sign. This is especially true when an individual is normally not socially withdrawn from others.

- Many who experience workplace burnout may seem extremely irritable. This may show in the means of rapid moods, and similar situations. If there is no apparent cause for this type of personality change, the issue may be related to workplace change.

- Many individuals may feel as if there is no hope for their current situation. They may walk in and out of each and every single day feeling a lack of motivation; many individuals may witness this behavior in the workplace and realize that it is uncharacteristic of the individual. This is a probable sign of work-related burnout.

- If you feel as if you have absolute no power, you are not getting anywhere, and you find yourself constantly feeding negative thoughts and emotions, you may be experiencing workplace burnout.

- Many individuals who experience burnout often start experiencing many different kinds of failures. These failures may be directly related to their work performance, or they may be experienced in their personal life.

There are a number of causes that may lead an individual to experience burnout associated with the workplace. The following reasons may be associated with this type of work-related stress:

- Many individuals set their goals in the workplace too high. Setting high goals or having others in the workplace place too high of goals is a common factor in workplace burnout.

- Many individuals may feel as if they are stuck in a particular job because they are unable to afford a change in careers, or they are unable to pass up the benefits that a job poses. For these individuals, workplace burnout may be experienced.

- Many individuals who have proved to be dependable and provide a high quality of work may be expected to consistently asked to perform additional work on top of their standard responsibilities. While many are flattered by the fact that they are given more work, this work can often become exhausting.

- There are many who do not feel personally challenged by their work. This type of work can become dull and a person may not feel as if they have anything to look forward to. This can result in workplace burnout as well.

Workplace burnout is a common issue that must be dealt with. If you are in charge of employees, it is important to know and understand the basics of workplace burnout. If you are an employee, it is important that you know and understand the basics as well. By understanding the conditions that cause this to occur, the symptoms associated with the condition, and how to overcome it, you can beat work-related burnout!
